The search for new β-glucosidase from yeast sources is important to improve the quality of wines. In this work, an S. pararoseus yeast strain has shown to be capable to produce a β-glucosidase with suitable combination of properties for functionality in wines and with potential to increase the concentration of free aroma compounds, showing good prospects for an industrial application.
EMSO software, a free tool for teaching and academic research, presents a favorable environment for simulation and optimization of chemical engineering problems. Although its use in research activities have been demonstrated in the literature, its application as a supporting tool for educational purposes in process systems engineering courses has not been evaluated. The objective of this paper is to demonstrate that this software is suitable as a tool for educational purposes in process systems engineering courses at undergraduate (complementary elective subject) and graduate levels. To accomplish this task, different cases studies, encompassing different sort of programming formulations, are proposed and solved with different solvers in EMSO.
The divided wall column (DWC) can achieve sharp separations of three or more components in a single shell, substituting conventional sequences of two or more binary<br />
distillation columns, with lower expenses. Despite these advantages, DWC models are not available in commercial chemical process simulators. To simulate DWC, users must employ instances of conventional column model and couple them in different configurations. In this paper, a DWC model was developed in EMSO (Environment for Modeling, Simulation and Optimization). DWC model was then used for simulating the separation of an equimolar mixture of three hydrocarbons. Results show that, depending on the number of trays, DWC presented energy savings compared to two ordinary distillation columns. Better separation was obtained when the number of divided trays was close to half the number of total trays. However, the liquid and vapor flow rates split into the divided section play a key role in the separation.
