This paper addresses the use of Genetic Algorithms to automatically quantify the three types of brain tissue, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), white matter, and gray matter. The Genetic Algorithm (GA) is a search and optimization algorithm modeled after the mechanics of natural selection and survival of the fittest.The quantification technique utilizes a statistical model of the noise and partial volume efSect andfits a derived probabiliry density function to that of the data. The results are compared with those obtained by a tree annealing algorithm.
