A noninterferometric technique is presented for determining the phase modulating characteristics of spatial light modulators. Examining the far-field diffraction pattern intensity distribution for specific input functions enables the phase modulation to be calculated. A wave‐front splitting interferometer has been constructed and analyzed for measuring the phase modulating properties of popular spatial light modulators (SLM). A modified liquid crystal television (LCTV) was then used in the experiment to verify the technique. It was determined that for this interferometric architecture, one full fringe shift corresponds to a 2π phase modulation. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons. Inc.

Experiments investigating the possibility of optical processing through turbulent media were performed. A liquid crystal television (LCTV) operating in a phase-mostly mode was utilized to simulate turbulence. A phase-switching interferometric technique for removing the phase distortion created by the turbulence was also investigated.
