Recently, Loftus and her associates have demonstrated that the ability of subjects to respond accurately to questioning about an event they witnessed can be systematically imparied by the interposition of misleading questions between exposure to the event and assessment of accuracy. One explanation for this low eyewitness accuracy is that it is due to demand characteristics created by the misleading questions. The present study addresses this issue using a modification of the paradigm developed by Loftus, Miller, and Bums (1978). The results indicate that even when the final accuracy test does not easily allow subjects to accede to demand pressure, significant impairment of eyewitness accuracy is still obtained. Since this lowered accuracy does not seem due to simple compliance to demand pressure, it suggests that misleading questions do in fact interfere with subsequent eyewitness accuracy. According to E. F. Loftus, questions that are subtly loaded with implications regarding an event can alter a witness's memories for that event (
A model of liaison psychiatry in general practice is described and its impact assessed using data from the Nottingham psychiatric case register. The model incorporates a comprehensive network of general practice psychiatric clinics for both psychiatrists and other mental health professionals, associated with mainly informal liaison with general practitioners and others in the primary care team, and a reduction in psychiatric outpatient clinics. Following the introduction of this model, the proportion of new and referred patients seen in primary care settings rose from 1% to 18% in Nottingham over an 8-year period. Over this period admission rates significantly fell in Nottingham compared with the rest of England and evidence is given that the growth of primary care psychiatry contributed significantly to this reduction.
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) among adults is characterized by inattentiveness and impulsivity. This article provides counselors with information about the etiology, assessment, and treatment of adult ADHD. The identification of the genetic and neurological features of ADHD has led to improvements in evaluation and treatment. Assessment of ADHD requires knowledge of the defining characteristics, subtypes, comorbid features, and functional aspects of ADHD. Effective treatments include both medical management and counseling to address psychosocial deficits.Earn 1 CE credit now for reading this article.
Culturally shaped attitudes towards persons with disabilities pose significant barriers to full participation in employment. Even with the enactment of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, implementation of the law will occur within the culturally defined stereotypes and assumptions which exist within society. A significant task for rehabilitation professionals will be the inclusion of positive perceptions of persons with disabilities into the conceptual ideology of individualism and equality.. This paper reviews the cultural difficulties of implementing civil rights legislation and addresses the role of rehabilitation professionals in promoting attitudinal changes in society.
