The model of PGE product generation development describes a product that has no direct previous generation as so-called product generation 1 (G1). Development in such a G1 environment poses special challenges that affect the development process: G1 development with a shortening of the time-to-market paired with a high pressure to innovate usually takes place without much experience knowledge. As a result, an increased number of technical changes, known as variations in the PGE model, is observed at a late stage of development. This is accompanied by the question of what testing activities are necessary to verify or validate (V&V) these variations. The focus of the paper lies on the analysis of the G1 challenges. The general procedure of the systematic that links the variations with the possible V&V activities is presented.
