A questionnaire designed to study the information seeking behavior of professional nurses was mailed to 600 occupational health nurses who work and reside in New York State. A 28% response rate (165 usable replies) was obtained. Results indicated respondents most need to know about government regulations relating to health care, new developments in their area of specialization, drug information, and the psychological aspects of disease. The respondents most frequently looked to peers and colleagues in their agency, personal files and books, and professional organizations as important sources of information. As a nation, we are currently experiencing a moment of racial reckoning, where issues of racial injustice, diversity, and educational inequality are debated. Literature offers a documentary source of evidence that informs the historical record. Children’s literature reveals our conceptions of social class, race, and the role of education in a given historical period. Scholars like Amanda Gailey at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln study changes in how Blacks are represented in children’s literature. Historically, children’s literature has avoided or neglected representations of Blacks, except as literary stereotypes.
Robert Putnam observed that social class differences, now more than ever, determine the life outcomes of American children. Putnam reported evidence that the American Dream is in crisis for children born into lower-class families—these children have far fewer opportunities for success. This might suggest a loss of a survival narrative for these children.
In this methodological study, a strategy for analyzing Balthazar Scales of Adaptive Behavior-II data and using the results in the assessment of classroom environments and in subsequent goal prioritization is described. The Balthazar Scales-II were administered to the female students in eight classrooms for severely retarded adolescents at a state developmental center. A principal components analysis was applied to this baseline data in order to assess the classroom environments and to then prioritize goals derived from the results. In the analysis, three modal classroom types were identified. A method for goal setting based on the correspondence between the modal classroom types and the hierarchy of educational goals in Krathwohl's Taxonomy of Educational Objectives was described.
