Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a gram-negative spiral bacteria that are associated with gastritis, peptic ulcer and gastric cancer. We have developed enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) that detects serum anti-H. pylori immunoglobulin G antibodies using H. pylori strains isolated from Korean patients. To assess the sensitivity and specificity of our assay system with different commercial kits, serum samples from 249 Korean patients with a variety of gastrointestinal diseases were tested. Among 249 Korean patients, 178 (71.5%) were positive in culture and/or urease test. The sensitivity and specificity between our assay system and four other commercial kits (Bio-Rad, DAKO, ROCHE, and IPR) were as follows: 97.8% and 92%, 94.3% and 53%, 56.5% and 92%, 83.3% and 96%, 58.2% and 92%, respectively. All sera showing discordant immunoassay results between different ELISA kits were confirmed by immunoblot analysis. These results indicate that our assay system showed a highly accurate and reliable results in diagnosis of H. pylori infection in Korean patients.
Dental age estimation of the living is limited because observing the histological structure of teeth is difficult. Therefore, several methods have been proposed to estimate age by observing changes on dental radiographs of pulpal size caused by secondary dentin deposition. This study aims to evaluate the validity of the Kvaal method to estimate the ages of Korean subjects using digital panoramic radiographs and formulate regression equations for use in Korean subjects. We included 266 Korean subjects (age 21-69 years) visiting Chosun University Dental Hospital (Gwangju, South Korea). The pulpal size and width of six tooth types (maxillary central incisor, lateral incisor, second premolar, mandibular lateral incisor, canine, and first premolar) were measured on digital panoramic radiographs according to the Kvaal method. Statistical interobserver/intraobserver reliabilities were calculated to evaluate the reproducibility of the measured values, and correlations between actual ages and measured values were identified. The differences between the predicted ages and the actual age were analyzed. Paewinsky method was also applied and its validity was evaluated. In addition, a series of new regression equations for the age estimation of Korean subjects was produced. When both methods were applied directly to the teeth of the subjects, significant differences were observed between the estimated and chronological ages. The length-related parameters of the teeth of subjects calculated by the original Kvaal method showed no significant correlation. A regression equation derived from the width parameters without the length ratios is proposed for use in Korean subjects.
Purpose:The aims of this study were to evaluate the clinical characteristics of patients with altered sensation and/or pain, and to determine outcome predictors affecting persistent neuropathy.
Methods:Patients who complained an altered sensation or pain following trigeminal nerve trauma were involved in this study. To determine outcome predictors affecting persistent neuropathy, the patients were divided into two groups; transient vs. persistent, and the clinical phenotypes are compared between groups. Data were analyzed with t-tests, chi-square, and multiple regression analyses with 95% confidence interval and p<0.05 significance level. Results: A total of 111 patients were included: 23 with transient and 88 persistent groups. The panoramic result and pin-prick test score were statistically different between the groups. Radiating symptoms after blunt and pinprick stimuli were also significantly different between groups. The results revealed that the presence of a neurologic lesion in the panoramic view result, reduced sensation in the pinprick test, and radiation in the pinprick test could affect the persistent group.
Conclusions:The presence of a neurologic lesion in panoramic view result and reduced sensation and radiating symptoms in the pin prick test would be defining features of one of the main clinical features of persistent neuropathy. These features could serve as outcome predictors diagnosing the permanent nerve injury in trigeminal nerve.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
