Ecological communities are fundamentally connected through a network of trophic interactions that are often complex and difficult to model. Substantial variation exists in the nature and magnitude of these interactions across various predators and prey and through time. However, the empirical data needed to characterize these relationships are difficult to obtain in natural systems, even for relatively simple food webs. Consequently, prey-dependent relationships and specifically the hyperbolic form (Holling’s Type II), in which prey consumption increases with prey density but ultimately becomes saturated or limited by the time spent handling prey, are most widely used albeit often without knowledge of their appropriateness. Here, we investigate the sensitivity of a simplified food web model for a natural, boreal system in the Kluane region of the Yukon, Canada to the type of functional response used. Intensive study of this community has permitted best-fit functional response relationships to be determined, which comprise linear (type I), hyperbolic (type II), sigmoidal (type III), prey- and ratio-dependent relationships, and inverse relationships where kill rates of alternate prey are driven by densities of the focal prey. We compare node- and network-level properties for a food web where interaction strengths are estimated using best-fit functional responses to one where interaction strengths are estimated exclusively using prey-dependent hyperbolic functional responses. We show that hyperbolic functional responses alone fail to capture important ecological interactions such as prey switching, surplus killing and caching, and predator interference, that in turn affect estimates of cumulative kill rates, vulnerability of prey, generality of predators, and connectance. Exclusive use of hyperbolic functional responses also affected trends observed in these metrics over time and underestimated annual variation in several metrics, which is important given that interaction strengths are typically estimated over relatively short time periods. Our findings highlight the need for more comprehensive research aimed at characterizing functional response relationships when modeling predator-prey interactions and food web structure and function, as we work toward a mechanistic understanding linking food web structure and community dynamics in natural systems.
Purpose Medical schools responding to challenges with fairness, equity, learning environments, and student wellness have reconsidered clerkship grades. This study used the Concerns-Based Adoption Model (CBAM) to explore how faculty responded to a change in the approach to assessment from focus on grades toward focus on feedback. Method This qualitative study used an inductive approach to analyze data from semistructured interviews with teaching faculty and education leaders at University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine 6 months following the elimination of traditional tiered clerkship grades. Participants were recruited in 2019 using purposive sampling. Interview questions addressed participants’ perceptions of the new approach to assessment and grading that emphasizes assessment for learning, including advantages and concerns. The authors analyzed data using thematic analysis informed by sensitizing concepts from CBAM. Results Nineteen faculty participated (11 medicine, 8 surgery). Faculty expressed optimism about the impact of the change on their clinical educator roles and sought faculty development to enhance feedback and assessment skills. Perceived benefits to students addressed learning and wellness, with concern for students’ motivation and professional development. Faculty shared uncertainty about their roles and larger systemic consequences involving the residency match and institutional reputation. Participants acknowledged that traditional grading is imperfect, yet felt a departure from this system represented significant culture change. Conclusions Faculty perceptions of the assessment and grade change in 2 large departments demonstrated tensions around grading. Their descriptions of change as an ongoing process aligned with CBAM and required them to consider new approaches and perspectives. While discourse about assessment and grading frequently focuses on learners, these findings support institutional consideration of the impact of changes in assessment on teaching faculty.
This study examined the relationship between music preference and extraversion on complex task performance in a sample of 34 college students from a small, Christian, liberal arts university. Separated into two groups of high and low extraversion, these 34 participants were invited to participate in the experimental phase of the study. For the experimental phase, each participant experienced three different music conditions (Preferred, Preset, and Silence) while performing a complex reading comprehension task. The results revealed a significant interaction effect between level of extraversion and music condition. Individuals with higher levels of extraversion performed marginally significantly better listening to preferred music during the complex task compared to silence and a preset music selection; all other sound conditions were not significant. It expresses emotion shared by all cultures, closes the gap between eras of time, and reflects attitudes and progression. The power of music holds a strong influence over many human functions and recent technological advances of the 20 th and 21 st centuries have made music highly accessible. In addition, the ubiquitous nature of music accessibility in modern society raises important questions about the pervasive presence of music in work and educational settings. Studies searching for the distracting or facilitating effect of music on task performance have generally been inconsistent. Despite inconclusive results, public acceptance of claims that support the facilitative function of music in task performance is common. The highly publicized study by Rauscher, Shaw, and Ky conducted in 1994 for example, found significant results "proving" Mozart music increased spatial reasoning performance in college students. Background: US health care is increasingly defined by over expenditure and inefficiency. Optimizing patient follow-up is critical, especially in cancers treated with high control rates. To optimize patient care, this study assessed time to disease recurrence or toxicity in patients with anal carcinoma. Materials and Methods: In total, 140 patients with biopsy-proven, nonmetastatic anal carcinoma, treated with chemoradiation utilizing intensity-modulated radiation therapy, were identified from our institutional database. This retrospective study evaluated local recurrence (LR), distant metastasis (DM), overall survival (OS), and late ≥grade 3 toxicity (LG3T). Patients were followed posttreatment every 3 months for 2 years, every 6 months in years 3 to 5, then yearly thereafter per NCCN recommendations. Results: The median age and follow-up was 58 years and 27 months, respectively. Patients were categorized into high (n=61; 44%) and low (n=77; 55%) risk groups based on stage. The 2-year LC, DMFS, and OS were 93%, 94%, and 89% and 5-year LC, DMFS, OS were 92%, 87%, and 85%, respectively. Overall, there were 29 events (9 LR, 11 DM, and 9 LG3T), with 62% of events occurring within year 1 and 79% within 2 years. Stratified by event type, at 2 years 89% of LR, 64% of DM, and 89% LG3T were identified. At the remaining follow-up points, the event incidence rate was 1.3%. Conclusion: With the majority of recurrences/toxicities occurring within the first 2 years, a reduction in follow-up during years 3 to 5 may provide adequate surveillance. Revisions of the current recommendations could maximize resources while improving patient quality of life.
