The Galapagos Islands are among the most renowned natural sites in the world. Unlike other oceanic archipelagos, the ecological and evolutionary processes characteristic of Galapagos have been minimally affected by human activities, and the archipelago still retains most of its original, unique biodiversity. However, several recent reports suggest that the development model has turned unsustainable and that the unique values of the archipelago might be seriously at risk. In response to international concern, UNESCO added Galapagos to the list of World Heritage in Danger in 2007. Our goal was to provide new insights into the origins of the present-day crisis and suggest possible management alternatives. To this end, we reexamined the Galapagos situation from a broad systems perspective, conceptualizing the archipelago as a complex social-ecological system. Past, present, and possible future trends were explored using the resilience theory as a perspective for understanding the dynamics of the system. Four major historical periods were characterized and analyzed using Holling's adaptive cycle metaphor. The current Galapagos situation was characterized as a prolonged series of crisis events followed by renewal attempts that have not yet been completed. Three plausible future scenarios were identified, with tourism acting as the primary driver of change. The current tourism model reduces the system's resilience through its effects on the economy, population growth, resource consumption, invasive species arrival, and lifestyle of the island residents. Opportunities to reorganize and maintain a desirable state do exist. However, strong political and management decisions are urgently needed to avoid an irreversible shift to a socially and environmentally undesirable regime. Key measures to achieve a new sustainability paradigm for Galapagos include modifying traditional practices to produce a more adaptive resilience-based co-management model, adopting a more comprehensive approach to territorial planning, strengthening participative approaches and institutional networks, and promoting transdisciplinary research at the frontiers of social and biophysical sciences.

In this study, the chemical composition, antimicrobial, and antioxidant activities of orange essential oil (AN), its folded orange oils (5×, 10×, 20×) and d-limonene (LN) were investigated. The results observed in the chemical composition showed a decrease in the major component LN, in contrast to other minor components, which increased their concentration, such as decanal, linalool, and α-terpineol. The antimicrobial activity was determined for foodborne pathogens using the disk diffusion method followed by the minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration. Results showed that folded orange oils (5×, 10×, 20×) had better antimicrobial activity than AN and LN. The antioxidant activity was carried out by 2,2ʹ-azinobis-3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonate and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl methods; folded orange oil 20× presented significantly better results (p ≤ 0.05) than other oils studied. Using folded oils from AN could be a natural alternative in food processing as ingredients with antimicrobial and antioxidant effect.Perfil químico, actividad antimicrobiana y antioxidante del aceite esencial de naranja y sus aceites concentrados RESUMEN En este estudio, se investigó la composición química, actividad antimicrobiana y antioxidante del aceite esencial de naranja (AN), sus concentrados (5×, 10×, 20×) y d-limoneno (LN). Los resultados en la composición química mostraron una disminución del componente mayoritario d-limoneno, contrario a otros componentes minoritarios que aumentaron su concentración como es el decanal, linalol y α-terpinol. La actividad antimicrobiana fue determinada para bacterias de importancia en alimentos por el método de difusión en disco seguido de la concentración mínima inhibitoria (CMI) y concentración mínima bactericida (CMB). Los resultados mostraron que los aceites concentrados (5×, 10×, 20×) presentaron significativamente mayor actividad antimicrobiana que el AN y LN. La actividad antioxidante se realizó por los métodos de ABTS y DPPH obteniendo que la fracción 20×, presentó actividad antioxidante significativamente mayor (p ≤ 0,05) que los demás aceites estudiados. The phytochemical profile of Melaleuca leucadendra L. leaf and fruit oils from Cuba was investigated by GC and GC/MS. Forty-one and sixty-four volatile compounds were identified and quantified, accounting for 99.2 and 99.5% of the leaf-oil and fruit-oil total composition, respectively. The main components were 1,8-cineol (43.0%), viridiflorol (24.2%), α-terpineol (7.0%), α-pinene (5.3%), and limonene (4.8%) in the leaf oil, and viridiflorol (47.6%), globulol (5.8%), guaiol (5.3%), and α-pinene (4.5%) in the fruit oil. The antioxidant capacity of these essential oils was determined by three different in vitro assays (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical, thiobarbituric acid reactive species (TBARS), and 2,2'-Azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical cation), and significant activities were evidenced for all of them.
