Chapada do Araripe is located on the border of three northeastern states: Ceará, Pernambuco and Piau and, due to its peculiar climatic conditions, it is an exceptional landscape, an oasis in the predominant caatinga biome in the northeastern hinterland. The soil of Chapada do Araripe hides a wealth far greater than that revealed in its vegetation. They are fossils, remains or traces of beings preserved in rocks, testimonies of ancient fauna and flora, of inestimable scientific value, known worldwide for their diverse content and exceptional preservation. However, the dissemination of this wealth to students of basic education in Cariri Ceará is still incipient. Seeking to bring the school community closer to the paleontological heritage, the National Department of Mineral Production (DNPM), through the Museum of Paleontology of Crato, offered the "Didactic Collection Fossils of Araripe" as pedagogical support material in the classrooms. Federal University of Ceará (UFC) offered training to 25 professionals to work in the research and dissemination of the Palaeontology of the Araripe Basin. This work aimed to find out how schools are using the DNPM pedagogical kit, to know the current activity of those trained by UFC in the dissemination, research and teaching of local paleontology and to intervene when necessary. The research was carried out in the cities of Juazeiro do Norte, Crato, Barbalha and Jardim, from April / 2014 to February / 2016. The DNPM didactic collection was little used in schools. As a strategy for using the didactic material that the unit received, workshops and guided tours were offered to represent teachers and students.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
