Objective. The study sought to correlate fear, stress, knowledge regarding COVID-19 in Nursing students and recent graduates in Mexico. Methods. Correlational design, sample comprising 912 nursing students and graduates during the last 18 months from public and private universities of Mexico. To measure the variables, the study applied the instrument Fear of COVID-19 Scale, knowledge subscale of the scale Knowledge, attitudes, and practices towards COVID-19, and the instrument COVID Stress Scale. Results. Relationship was found of the age variable with fear, danger of contamination, traumatic stress, knowledge and minor socioeconomic consequences (p<0.05). Likewise, relationship was observed of fear with stress regarding COVID-19, danger of contamination, socioeconomic consequences, xenophobia, traumatic stress, and compulsive checking (p<0.05). Stress and knowledge explain the presence of fear regarding COVID-19 in 50.3%, and fear and knowledge explain stress regarding COVID-19 in 50.4%. Conclusion. Nursing students and recent graduates have high levels of stress and fear, besides low level of knowledge. The presence of high stress and low knowledge predict fear regarding COVID-19. Interventions are required on knowledge, stress, and fear regarding COVID-19 in the population studied.
Objetivo. Determinar la influencia de los factores conductuales y biológicos sobre el riesgo para pie diabético en adultos etapa de prevejez y vejez que asisten a grupos de ayuda mutua. Material y métodos. Correlacional-predictivo, con una muestra de 105 personas recolectado por muestreo a conveniencia en grupos de ayuda mutua de tres municipios de Coahuila, México. Se aplicó una cedula de datos personales, el instrumento IMEVID (?=.81), la escala EBADE (?=.78), la recolección de medidas antropométricas, biomarcadores metabólicos y se realizó la valoración de riesgo para pie diabético. Se aplicó estadística descriptiva, correlación de spearman y modelos de regresión. Resultados. Participaron 87 (82.9%) mujeres y 18 (17.1%) hombres con una M= 62.60 años (DE=10.330) años. El riesgo para pie diabético se relacionó con las barreras de autocuidado en diabetes (r=.224, p<0.5) y el índice de masa corporal (r=.255, p<0.5). El modelo predice un 19.6% el riesgo (F=6.803, R2=19.6, p=0.001), siendo las variables predictoras las barreras de autocuidado en diabetes, el colesterol de baja densidad y el índice de masa corporal. Conclusión. Los factores conductuales y biológicos predicen el aumento del riesgo para pie diabético, por lo que nos da una valoración general de salud de los grupos de ayuda mutua de México.
Actitudes hacia la vejez y actitudes hacia la sexualidad del adulto mayor en estudiantes y profesionales de enfermería Attitudes towards old age and attitudes towards elderly's sexuality in students and nursing professionals RESUMENObjetivo: Analizar la relación entre las actitudes hacia la vejez y actitudes hacia la sexualidad del adulto mayor en profesionales y estudiantes de enfermería de Yucatán, México. Metodología: Se realizó un estudio con 212 estudiantes y profesionales de enfermería.Se aplicó el instrumento de actitudes negativas hacia la vejez en población mexicana y el cuestionario de actitudes hacia la sexualidad en la vejez analizándose con SPSS v. 22 mediante estadística descriptiva e inferencial. Resultados: No existe relación entre actitudes hacia la vejez y sexualidad del adulto mayor (p = 0,504); sin embargo, se halló relación de la edad con los estereotipos negativos físicos y conductuales asociados a la vejez (p = 0,001), así como de las actitudes hacia la sexualidad del adulto mayor, miedo al envejecimiento en los estudiantes de enfermería (p = 0,022), y de la edad con miedo al envejecimiento (p = 0,041), y miedo al deterioro intelectual y/o abandono en los profesionales de enfermería (p = 0,042). Conclusión: Se hace necesaria la intervención para modificar los estereotipos en la muestra, lo que repercutirá en un mejor cuidado.
ENSAYO RESUMENLa población adulta mayor maya es considerada vulnerable, debido a barreras que influyen en su calidad de vida, tales como su situación económica y las malas relaciones culturales con el profesional de salud, problemática sobre la que versa este ensayo. La deficiencia de políticas públicas enfocadas a mejorar las condiciones de vida del adulto mayor con diabetes, específicamente en zonas indígenas, es un problema que se debe atender en todo el territorio mexicano, un país con una amplia gama de culturas, por ello se requiere crear y evaluar distintos métodos que ayuden a aumentar la calidad de vida de los adultos mayores, mediante la propuesta de proyectos de salud que consideren los pensamientos y aspectos culturales de cada población y que mejoren las relaciones culturales de la población y los profesionales de la salud, máxime considerando que vivir con una enfermedad crónica puede generar cambios en el ámbito familiar, social e individual, por ende, es fundamental reconocer su forma de vivir y aplicar los cuidados transculturales en la población maya.
As people age, there is a high chance their cognitive abilities will decline. The Baby Boomer population will soon reach an age where this is a major problem. As cognitive ability declines, so does quality of life. Everyday, 10,000 baby boomers turn 65 and this trend will continue for the next 15 years. With potential millions in need of a solution, cost is a major issue as well. Different forms of stimulation, like music and puzzles, have been shown to improve cognitive ability. Improvisational theatre is a form of stimulation that has not been thoroughly researched in older adults. This is a randomized control pilot study for utility and preliminary efficacy of improvisational theatre on cognitive ability and mood in older adults with age-related memory complaints. 11 elderly participants with age-related memory complaints from an assisted living center were randomized into an improv class (n=5) or a television watching control group (n=6). The improv group participated in an improv class once a week, for 8 weeks, lasting one hour per session. The passive stimulation group watched television or a movie for one hour a week at the same time as the improv class, for 8 weeks. The participants were given the following surveys one week prior to the start of the study and again the day of the last session: Montreal Cognitive Assessment, Verbal Fluency Test, Letter-Number Sequencing Test, Geriatric Depression Scale, Memory Functioning Questionnaire and the Functional Activities Questionnaire. The improv group demonstrated an average improvement in executive function, memory self-appraisal, phonemic cognition, and a decrease in mild cognitive impairment. The verbal fluency test, which measures phonemic cognition showed significant improvement with a p-value of 0.037. In the television watching group, there was an average improvement in executive function, phonemic cognition and some aspects of memory self-appraisal. None of which were significant. No adverse events occurred during the study. This study shows that improv has the potential to improve phonemic cognition because there was a significant increase in the study. Though the other areas that were tested (depression, executive function, working memory, memory self-appraisal or mild cognitive impairment) did not improve significantly, all either improved more than the control group or regressed less than the control group. Since this was the first study of its kind, more researchers should explore the effects of improv on cognition in elderly persons. Subjectively, the improv participants improved greatly in their ability to follow and remain active during the various games.
