Ichthyological survey of the Camba Cué lagoon, Apipé Grande Island, Corrientes, Argentina. The Apipé Grande island is a Provincial Reserve located in the Paraná river at 1400 km, from its origin at the Buenos Aires harbor, and two km downstream of the Yacyretá Dam. The outstanding feature of the island is that 70 % of its area comprises wetland environments. At the center of the island there are Hermosa and Cambá Cué «lagunas» with 300 and 1000 hectares respectively. The present paper reports the results of the first ichthyological survey to the referred water bodies. As a result of the sampling fieldwork 55 fish species were identified. The presence of species belonging to lotic and lenitic environments is interpreted as evidence for the close hydrological relationship of these water bodies and the Paraná river system. Esta isla se destaca por poseer cerca del 70 % de la superficie compuesta por zonas bajas e inundables integradas por madrejones, esteros y lagunas. En la zona central de la isla se encuentran las lagunas Hermosa y Cambá Cué que cubren un área aproximada de 300 y 1000 hectáreas respectivamente. En el presente trabajo se informan los resultados del primer relevamiento ictiológico de los referidos cuerpos de agua. La toma de muestras realizada en la laguna Cambá Cué permitió identificar 55 especies de peces. Summary
Four species of the genus Gymnotus are present in Argentina: G. inaequilabiatus, G. omarorum, G. pantanal, and G. sylvius, the last three species being recorded for the first time in freshwater courses. Gymnotus omarorum, G. pantanal, and G. sylvius together with others of the genus Brachyhypopomus are the group of fishes that bear the greatest impact in the trade as live bait for sport fishing in the northeastern region of Argentina. Within this large area, only the provinces of Chaco, Corrientes, and Formosa have regulations for the catch, trade, and sale of species as live bait. Unfortunately, the species covered by legal regulations are Gymnotus carapo and Brachyhypopomus brevirostris, neither of which occurs in freshwater habitats of Argentina. Comments are included as to how this bad taxonomy affects the regulations and conservation status of these species.
Artisanal fish at del Plata basin (Argentina) and its implications for the biodiversity conservation. The aim of this contribution is to consider different issues derived from fish captures from artisanalcommercial fisheries in the Paraná Basin in Argentina. We identify certain impacts related to fishing practices on the involved natural populations and its compromises in ichtiofaunal biodiversity conservation. We consider 17 years of information based on data of fisheries exports for different inland species between 1994-2010. These data includes valuable commercial big sized native fishes like sábalo (Prochilodus lineatus), boga (Leporinus obtusidens), tararira (Hoplias malabaricus), surubí (Pseudoplatystoma spp.), dorado (Salminus brasiliensis) and patí (Luciopimelodus pati), together with several catfish species and minor species as silversides. Freshwater fish exports show a major rise resulting in 331517 ton for these years. The target species is sábalo (88.77 %), other accompanying species are tararira (4.16 %), boga (3.7 %) and Patí (1.35 %) whereas the remainig catches belong to other species. There is a strong rise in the catches of these other species in certain years while there is not a clear legislation for these fish species that allow implementing a proper fishery management along the basin. The importing countries are Brazil, Colombia, Bolivia and Nigeria among others. Since 2003 Colombia buy an average of 50% of inland fisheries exports from Argentina. The analysis historical data (1994)(1995)(1996)(1997)(1998)(1999)(2000)(2001)(2002)(2003)(2004)(2005)(2006)(2007)(2008)(2009)(2010) reveals the need to implement measures to control and management of fisheries and its effects on fish biodiversity conservation in the basin.Key words: inland fisheries, fisheries exports, conservation, fish biodiversity.Resumen: El objetivo del presente trabajo es considerar distintos aspectos que surgen del análisis de las exportaciones pesqueras provenientes de la pesca comercial artesanal de la Cuenca del Plata, Argentina. Se trata de identificar aquellos impactos vinculados a las prácticas pesqueras sobre las poblaciones naturales involucradas y los compromisos relacionados con la conservación de la biodiversidad de la ictiofauna de la cuenca. Se analizan 17 años de datos de las pesquerías comerciales artesanales correspondientes al tramo argentino del río Paraná sobre registros oficiales de los productos pesqueros exportados para distintas especies durante el período 1994-2010.
