Alternative routes include a variety of programs and pathways that recruit and prepare teachers outside of traditional university-based programs. These include early-entry programs that provide brief 5-to 6-week preservice preparation before placing graduates in schools or longer term residency programs, in which interns are placed with mentor teachers in a paid yearlong internship. Such programs are run by districts, states, and nonprofi t organizations, such as Teach for America or the New Teacher Project.
