Zinc, a metal found in the Earth’s crust, is indispensable for human health. In the human body, around 60% of zinc is present in muscles, 30% in bones, and the remaining 10% in skin, hair, pancreas, kidneys and plasma. An adequate zinc balance is essential for the maintenance of skeletal growth, development and function. It is also necessary for basic cellular functions including enzyme activation, cell signaling and energy metabolism. Inadequate zinc status is associated with a wide variety of systemic disorders including cardiovascular impairment, musculoskeletal dysfunctions and oromaxillary diseases. In this article, we briefly discuss the role of zinc deficiency in the genesis of various oromaxillary diseases, and explain why adequate zinc homeostasis is vital for the maintenance of oral and general health.
Background: Worldwide Electronic Medical Records (EMR) when compared to a paper-based system has been proven to improve service delivering numerous health care facilities. However, no research has been described in the literature regarding the user's perception of the clinical electronic medical record (EMR) system in Rwanda. The objective of this study is to evaluate the health care consumer's perception of the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) OpenClinic regarding improving the quality of health care delivery within the hospital setting. How does the OpenClinic system affect the patients' waiting time? How complete is the information obtained from OpenClinic as compared to paper medical records, and the level of satisfaction of the users of OpenClinic. Method: A structured questionnaire was developed, validated and utilized in this quantitative research project. Quantitative data were collected from 170 participants while an interview guide was used to collect qualitative data from 6 key informants at a referral hospital in Kigali. The SPSS version 20.0 was used to analyze the quantitative data. The interviews transcribed verbatim; the data were thematically analyzed and categorized by pre-determined themes. Permission to conduct the study was approved from the ethics committee of the University of Rwanda, College of Health Sciences and the hospital. Results: The majority of the participants were satisfied with OpenClinic, (90%), while only a few (10%) did not perceive any advantage of a computer-based EMR and preferred paper based records. Conclusion: Openclinc EMR was seen to be an improvement in the data collection involving health care delivery in Kigali, Rwanda.
BackgroundDental caries is still a health problem worldwide, its prevalence and incidence are associated with various factors like age, sex, social status, dietary patterns and oral hygiene habits.MethodologyA Secondary data collected from outreaches done by UR CMHS, School of Dentistry at Kimironko II Primary School was analyzed. This secondary data had been obtained using structured questionnaires with close ended questions. Clinical examination had also been done to gather information. SPSS statistical software package version 22 was used to analyse data from Community outreach done at Kimironko Primary School in August 2019.ResultsThe prevalence of dental caries of 42.4% was found among children aged 6-12 years old of Kimironko II Primary School. The researchers found the following to be statistically significantly associated with prevalence of dental caries: gender (p=0.042), dental visits (p=0.001), and use of chew sticks or miswaks (p=0.041). Females were 1.4 times more likely to develop dental caries (OR: 1.462; 95% CI: 1.16-2.017; p=0.021) and children who did not use toothpick were 2 times more likely to develop dental caries (OR: 2.149; 95%CI: 1.251-4.395; p=0.036), whereas visiting a dental practitioner was protective against dental caries (OR: 0.362, 95% CI: 0.251-0.516; p=0.001).ConclusionDental caries is prevalent among children of Kimironko II Primary School. Appropriate preventive measures should be taken to protect those found to be exposed.Rwanda J Med Health Sci 2021;4(3):341-346
