From May 1979 to August 1984, 112 infrahyoid myocutaneous flaps (IHMCFs) were used for reconstruction of the tongue after resection of lingual carcinoma (67 flaps in 63 consecutive cases) and for repair of defects after resection of carcinomas of buccal mucosa (23 cases), floor of mouth (8 cases), parotid gland (7 cases), and other malignancies (7 cases). Ten IHMCFs were extended to Ludwig's angle for repairing the open defect of the cheek or combined defect in the buccal mucosa and hard palate. The donor sites of 76 IHMCFs could be sutured primarily. The flap was successful in 90% of the cases (101 of 112 cases). Postoperatively, 94% of the cases (60 of 64 cases) of reconstructed tongue had good deglutition and 78% of the cases (50 of 64 cases) gave satisfactory enunciation. IHMCF is a new, versatile, reliable, and convenient flap suitable for repairing the defects in and around the oral cavity, particularly in the tongue, even in aged and weak patients.
A novel membrane inlet interface coupled to a single-photon ionization (SPI) miniature time-of-flight mass spectrometer has been developed for on-line rapid measurement of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) light source for SPI was a commercial krypton discharge lamp with photon energy of 10.6 eV and photon flux of 10(10) photons/s. The experimental results showed that the sensitivity was 5 times as high as obtained with the traditional membrane inlet. The enrichment efficiency could be adjusted in the range of 10 to 20 times for different VOCs when a buffer cell was added to the inlet interface, and the memory effect was effectively eliminated. A detection limit as low as 25 parts-per-billion by volume (ppbv) for benzene has been achieved, with a linear dynamic range of three orders of magnitude. The rise times were 6 s, 10 s and 15 s for benzene, toluene and p-xylene, respectively, and the fall time was only 6 s for all of these compounds. The analytical capacity of this system was demonstrated by the on-line analysis of VOCs in single puff mainstream cigarette smoke, in which more than 50 compounds were detected in 2 s.
A new kind of monolithic capillary electrochromatography column with poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene-co-methacrylic acid) as the stationary phase has been developed. The stationary phase was found to be porous by scanning electron microscopy and the composition of the continuous bed was proved by IR spectroscopy to be the ternary polymer of styrene, divinylbenzene, and methacrylic acid. The effects of operating parameters, such as voltage, electrolyte, and organic modifier concentration in the mobile phase on electroosmotic flow were studied systematically. The retention mechanism of neutral solutes on such a column proved to be similar to that of reversedphase high performance liquid chromatography. In addition, fast analyses of phenols, chlorobenzenes, anilines, isomeric compounds of phenylenediamine and alkylbenzenes within 4.5 min were achieved.
