The crude extract of Streptomyces sp. strain KM86-9B, isolated from a marine sponge, displayed significant inhibition on topoisomerase I activity. Investigation of the causative components by bioactivity-directed fractionation resulted in the isolation of a series of iso- and anteiso-fatty acids.
Ecosystem-based fisheries management requires a holistic assessment of the status of fisheries by integrating fishery ecosystem indicators for management objectives. In this study four objectives were identified such as the maintenance of the sustainability, biodiversity and habitat quality and socio-economic benefits. The ecosystem-based fisheries assessment (EBFA) model to assess fisheries and their resources at the ecosystem level developed for Korean fisheries (Zhang et al., 2009) has a number of indicators for three management objectives. However, it was found that there were some overlapping components among indicators and that there were difficulties in assessing some indicators in the EBFA model. This study identified problems of the approach and suggested more pragmatic and simpler indicators. It also presented alternative reference points to assess indicators and discussed issues associated with the application of the EBFA model to a marine ranching ecosystem. In this study a total of 24 indicators were used for the assessment which included 4 socio-economic indicators. New indicators and reference points were demonstrated by applying it to the Uljin marine ranch.
To reduce hydrological disasters, it is necessary to operate rain gauge stations at locations where the spatio-temporal characteristics of rainfall can be reflected. Entropy has been widely used to evaluate the designs and uncertainties associated with rain gauge networks. In this study, the optimal rain gauge network in the Daegu and Gyeongbuk area, which requires the efficient use of water resources due to low annual precipitation and severe drought damage, was determined using conditional and joint entropy, and the selected network was quantitatively evaluated using the root mean square error (RMSE). To consider spatial distribution, prediction errors were generated using kriging. Four estimators used in entropy calculations were compared, and weighted entropy was calculated by weighting the precipitation. The optimal number of rain gauge stations was determined by calculating the RMSE reduction and the reduction ratio according to the number of selected rain gauge stations. Our findings show that the results of conditional entropy were better than those of joint entropy. The optimal rain gauge stations showed a tendency wherein peripheral rain gauge stations were selected first, with central stations being added afterward.
