The surgical ciliated cyst of the maxilla (SCCM) is a rare, delayed complication of surgical intervention in the maxilla sinus. It can present several years following surgery, and has been postulated to arise from implantation of the respiratory epithelium during the surgical procedure. In this article, we report the case of a patient with SCCM who presented 20 years following Le Fort I surgery. Previous radiographs showed evidence of a right maxillary cystic lesion as early as 2 years following surgery. We describe the clinical, radiographic and histolopathologic presentation of the entity as well as the surgical management. This case demonstrates maxillary surgical ciliated cyst development with a relatively short latency period and underscores the paucity in understanding of the aetiology, pathophysiology and growth kinetics of this lesion.
Disparity in didactic education among oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS) training programs has driven a national conversation regarding the need for a standardized OMS curriculum, which has been recently amplified by the drastic interruption of OMS training programs during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. In the present report, we have described the Collaborative OMS Virtual Interinstitutional Didactic (COVID) Program, a multiinstitutional educational curriculum developed in response to the pandemic and aimed toward OMS resident education.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
