Three isolated contributions to scientific instrumentation are re‐emphasised. Although development of the camera lucida and the stereoscope pre‐dated photography, all three inventions are of interest to photogrammetrists. They were created by three remarkable British scientists. The men in question were William Hyde Wollaston, Charles Wheatstone and Archibald Ban. Their contributions to science are worthy of detailed study.
A centenary tribute is paid to a soldier and sportsman, surveyor and inventor, artist and humorist. Vivian Thompson served in two wars, the second of which resulted in his untimely death. His Stereo‐plotter, first described to the Royal Geographical Society in 1908, remains as a memorial and as a reminder of a great opportunity which was lost.
Non-topographic photogrammetry is often of interest because of unusual fields of application. A recently designed Galileo-Santoni stereometric camera has been used to photograph carvings made approximately 3500 years ago. A contour plot has provided the archaeologist with a permanent and quantitative record.
Photographic surveying by Deville was published in 1895. This article marks the centenary of the publication of one of the earliest English language books on photogrammetry. Deville and his surveyors were responsible for the mapping of large areas in western Canada by photographic means. The techniques were explained in his book, originally written for his own staff when he was Surveyor General of Canada.
