Eingegangen am 13. Januar 1981 Herrn Prof. Dr . M . Seefelder zum 60. Geburtstag gewidmet . Photoelectron Spectra of Phenylethynes, I. -Phenylethyne -Model Probe for Substituent EffectsThe four low energy n-orbitals of ethynylbenzene (1) respond differently to substitution at the alkyne site due to their respective symmetry properties. The gas phase He(1) PE spectra of the series 1 -13 (C6H, -C = C -R) are presented and the energetic trend of the x-bands in relation to R is investigated. Relative inductive substituent effects for Rincluding R = Hare gained via [C,H, -C = C -Iz 13 from a composite molecule MO model; they correspond with known substituent constants. The PE spectra of tolane (12) and of 13 suggest conformeric mixtures to be present; their composition is discussed on the basis of the PE data and of semiempirical MO calculations.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
