Objective: Cisplatin (CIS) consumption has become a common problem that affects the health of patients around the globe. Kidney has been suspected to be particularly susceptible to the destructive effects of CIS and nephrotoxic effects are still contentious which in turn affects the Quality of Life (QoL) of patients and increase the mortality rate. This study was conducted to investigate the nephroprotective effect of Noni Juice (NJ) and Divine Noni Gold (DNG) as herbal medicine with established antioxidant properties against the controversial nephrotoxic effect of CIS in mice. Methods:Mice were divided into four groups, each group contained six mice. Group I was kept as normal, Group II received CIS (5.0 mg/kg b. wt. i. p.) on day one for 14 d. Group III and IV received NJ (0.35 ml/mouse p. o.) and DNG (0.35 ml/mouse p. o.) respectively once daily for 14 d, Group V received CIS (5.0 mg/kg b. wt. i. p.) on day one and NJ (0.35 ml/mouse p. o.) once daily for 14 d. Similarly, Group VI received CIS (5.0 mg/kg b. wt. i. p.) on day one and DNG (0.35 ml/mouse p. o.) once daily for 14 d. On day 15 blood from all the mice was collected from the carotid vein and cardiac puncture routes, and the biochemical markers viz. lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatinine phosphokinase (CPK), and urea were assessed. Kidney from all the animals was isolated, and catalase (CAT), glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), thiols and lipid peroxidase (LPO) were estimated.Results: CIS-induced marked kidney injury; congestion of tubules, glomerular distortion foci, thickened and blocked blood vessels. Also showed significant elevation of LDH, CPK, and urea with significant inhibition of CAT, GSH, SOD, thiols activities and simultaneously elevation of LPO level. Co-administration of NJ and DNG respectively with CIS protected kidney tissues via oxidative stress inhibition.Conclusion: NJ and DNG possess protective effect against CIS-induced cellular damage in the kidney by decreasing the level of serum biochemical markers, enhancing the level of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants and maintaining the LPO level. Results suggest that NJ and DNG have strong nephroprotective effect against CIS-induced nephrotoxicity.
The present study was aimed to evaluate the anti-obesity property of Tamarindus indica seed extract (TSE) on high fat-fed obese rats. TSE was prepared by cold maceration method and qualitative phytochemical studies had been carried out. In vitro cell viability assay (MTT assay) was and oil red staining for evaluating the lipid accumulation in cells was carried out using 3T3-L1 cells, and leptin levels was evaluated by ELISA. In-vivo Obesity was induced in experimental rats by administration of a high-fat diet for 04 weeks. The anti-obesity effect was screened by oral administration of TSE at two different dose levels i.e., 250 and 500mg/kg b. Wt. Along with a high-fat diet for a period of 04 weeks. The anti-obesity activity is estimated in terms of body weight gain, serum triglycerides (TG), Total cholesterol (TC). In -vitro studies revealed that the TSE has no cytotoxic effect, Administration of a high-fat diet for 04 weeks significantly increased the body weight, serum triglycerides, cholesterol. Upon treatment with TSE, a significant dose-dependent alteration in body weight, triglycerides, cholesterol levels were observed, inferring the anti-obesity property of Tamarindus seed extract.
Depression is a condition of no mood and loss of interest in any activity that can diminish a person’s thinking, conduct, tendencies, emotional state, and a sense of well-being. Although there is a conventional class of medication which have been beneficial in the treatment of depression, current studies have reported having side effects which can be minimized by the intervention of herbs and phytochemicals. Most of the studies have proven the various mechanisms and have started to research a very ground-breaking method by glancing the ancient treatmen. Where this new approach of using the herbs and phytochemicals has shown better results alone and in combination with conventional drugs which has shown lesser adverse effects. The practice of phytomedicine is an additional option for the treatment of depression. In the various segments of treating the depression, the mainstream can be a breakthrough including phytoconstituents. In this aspect, there are many contributions for the treatment of the depression acting to the neuronal level signaling and the phytoconstituents also have shown some basic mechanisms in the treatment of depression as that of the conventional medications following some primary hypothesis and signaling pathways and life interactions that effects the brain in either way to treat the depression in all sort of way. Clinical evidence is required to provide backing to the safety and effectiveness of herbs and phytochemicals alone or in combination with currently available drugs to overcome the reported side effects during the treatment of depression.
Liquorice plant is considered one of the important medicinal and economical plants. It is rich with many compounds, minerals, vitamins, and even plant hormones. This research is aimed to study the possibility of using callus tissue extracts as an alternative to plant growth regulators added to the culture media. A factorial experiment was implemented to find out the appropriate combination between 2, 4-D and BA for callus induction on Liquoricenode explants. It was found that a combination of 2 mg/l 2, 4-D with 2.5 mg/l BA is the best one for callus induction and maintenance using MS medium. Water and alcoholic extracts were prepared from callus tissue at concentrations (0, 2, 4, 6, 8 or 10) ml/l then added to culture medium as an alternative to plant growth regulators. The effect of these concentrations on growth and development of tissues and organs for some plants was studied using soya bean, potato and wheat plants for this purpose. Results showed that water extract induced shoot proliferation from potato single nodes. Both types of extracts increased soya bean callus fresh weight significantly. It was found also that water extract was more effective than alcoholic one in increasing vegetative and root parts in germinating wheat seeds.
