This paper examines the farming systems (shifting cultivation, intercropping, monocropping, backyard, livestock and fish farming) in Kumasi, Ghana and the impact of urbanization and increasing population growth on natural resources and the environment. The use of inputs in farming systems (inputs supply and demand balance) is described, showing that large quantities of potentially useful organic fertilizer materials are wasted. Recommendations are: (1) to increase soil fertility by the application of organic manure; (2) to promote intensive use of available land for high value crops especially in the peri-urban areas; and (3) to promote off-farm and on-farm income-generating activities, particularly among women, who are most affected by loss of farmlands due to urbanization.
