No Islāmic Scholar in Lagos State will deny the fact that, Zakāt is the most abandoned out of the five pillars of Islām . Even, the few affluent Muslims who pay attention to it may not be perfect in its annual deduction and disbursement. This study assessed and evaluated the application of Zakāt as employed by Iba Housing Estate Zakāt Agency for Poverty Alleviation with a view of determining its success in ameliorating poverty among Muslims in the community. Using field and library based researches; it has been found that the agency has recorded a very little success in its few years of operation with the small fund available to operate upon. Its best practices include, rendering of support and assistance to the needy and the poor challenged with health problems, widows, orphans etc. within the area. However, the sources of income of the agency are circumscribed to only Zakāt payment which cannot create an avenue for outstanding impacts. The study recommends among others, that in order to contribute immensely to reduce poverty, as well as to be able to cover the needs of the poor Muslims in the community, the agency should diversify its efforts in getting more funds from other lawful sources, groups, agencies and wealthy individuals who have been showing interest in supporting their cause.
Islamic legislation on wealth acquisition is an integral part of the Islamic economic system. Crypto-currency is a new technological development in the global financial system. This development has become a contentious issue among Islamic economists, financial experts, jurists, scholars, and institutions. Many unsuspecting Muslims are also cynical about its appropriateness or otherwise in their economic and financial activities. This paper adopted a qualitative methodology, which relied on article journals, textbooks, internet sources, and fatāwā (verdicts) of Islamic scholars and Islamic bodies. The paper also derived logical deduction and conclusion from the Qur’ān and Ahādith (sayings of Prophet Muhammad [PBUH]). The paper found that, generally, crypto-currencies are used to acquire wealth. It revealed that, some seemingly Sharī’ah compliant crypto-currencies are used to acquire wealth. Although, most crypto-currencies do not conform to the Islamic concept of wealth acquisition, the paper concluded that Sharī’ah compliant crypto-currencies should and could be better developed to accommodate Muslims and Muslim investors in their bid to acquire wealth.
This paper documents and also evaluates the different phases of da'wah activities by some notable late and old Arabic and Islamic scholars in an ancient town called Ojo. It has been established that, idol worshipping was predominant among the Aworis in Ojo before the advent of Islam there. But with the coming of Islam as a rescue train, da'wah methods were explored by these religious proselytizers not only to gather people into the fold of Islam, but also to orientate them to the fundamental principles of the religion. These da'wah activities underwent various changes in Ojo due to some influencing factors such as the roles of Du'aat, continuous transformation of individual ideologies, etc. The study observed that in order to achieve proper, commendable, reward able and effective da'wah activities in Ojo, modern methodology with sound knowledge of both Arabic and Islamic studies which must be complemented by English language should be acquired by the contemporary and prospective da'wah workers in this progressive locality. It, therefore, recommends that, inclusion of interfaith relationship, meaningful dialogue, economic empowerment, career counseling, purposeful leadership seminars, visitations to orphanages, hospitals, prisons, etc, should form part of their da'wah activities.
