The first occurrence of a giant squid, Architeuthis sp. (one specimen), and the oarfish, Regalecus russellii (two specimens) in the East Sea were reported based on specimens collected in January and February 2010. The giant squid (Architeuthis sp.) stranded at Pohang in Jan. 2010 was female, 175 cm in mantle length (ML), 506 cm in tentacle length (TL), and 33.9% FL/ML, it contained common squid beaks. Both stranded oarfish (Regalecus russellii) at Uljin (Jan. 2010) and Yeongdeok (Feb. 2010) were male, with total weigths (TW) of 18,506 and 21,703 g and total lengths (TL) of 3,850 and 3,670 mm, respectively. The stomach of the first was empty, while that of the second was filled with euphausiids. In the East Sea, giant squid have been stranded 14 times in five areas, while 17 oarfish have been stranded in nine areas. Since 1990, the two species have been found most often at Pohang.
The dominant species were Thamnaconus modestus and Sebastes schlegeli. Hierarchical clustering analysis showed five fish groups, with frequency and number of individuals similar to results of correspondence analysis (CA), which showed a closer relationship to the year term than the season term. CA showed that temperature was an important factor influencing fish species richness and abundance. Three main fish assemblage types coexisted around Dokdo: an East Sea coastal fish assemblage, a subtropical fish assemblage, and a cold water fish assemblage.
We estimated the population size and fishing mortality of Pacific cod Gadus macrocephalus during the spawning season in waters off Woipo, Geoje Island, Korea, using a mark-recapture method. We marked and released 51 cod>50 cm in total length; six were recaptured by local fishermen during the period from December 15 to 31, 2009. The estimated population size was ca. 180,000 and the fishing mortality of the exploitable cod was 26%. Although we could assume a closed population due to the short survey period, we evaluated the uncertainty in the estimates by applying bootstrap resampling because the sample size was small. The estimated 95% confidence interval was 94,000-568,000 for the population size and 8-49% for fishing mortality. Our study demonstrated that the application of mark-recapture methods and bootstrap resampling can be useful in stock assessment for fisheries management in Korea, but requires a larger sample size, spatially extensive coverage, and sophisticated mark-recapture models based on a refined sampling design for reliable stock assessment and biological reference points in sustainable cod management.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
