A Salmonella typhimurium chromosomal deletion removing ≈19 kb of DNA at centisome 65 reduces invasion of cultured epithelial cells as well as the expression of lacZY operon fusions to several genes required for the invasive phenotype. As the deleted region contains no genes previously known to affect Salmonella invasion, we investigated the roles of individual genes in the deleted region using a combination of cloning, complementation and directed mutation. We find that the deletion includes two unrelated regulatory genes. One is the Salmonella homologue of Escherichia coli barA (airS ), which encodes a member of the multistep phosphorelay subgroup of two‐component sensor kinases. The action of BarA is coupled to that of SirA, a member of the phosphorylated response regulator family of proteins, and includes both HilA‐dependent and HilA‐independent components. The other regulatory gene removed by the deletion is the Salmonella homologue of E. coli csrB, which specifies a regulatory RNA implicated in controlling specific message turnover in E. coli. These results identify a protein that is likely to play a key role in the environmental control of Salmonella invasion gene expression, and they also suggest that transcriptional control of invasion genes could be subject to refinement at the level of message turnover.
Objective To determine if an existing course in genetics should be revised to refocus on the topic of genomics and its impact on health and primary care, a survey of chiropractors was conducted regarding genomics and patient care. Methods A short survey was designed to ascertain chiropractors' knowledge and use of genomics in their practices, particularly regarding direct to consumer genetic testing. Nine closed-ended questions and 2 open-ended questions were included. Pearson correlation was used to evaluate relationships between close-ended responses. Content analysis was conducted on the final open-ended question that queried respondents for further comments. Results There were 181 completed surveys returned. Patients do ask chiropractors about their own direct to consumer genetic testing results—42% indicated that they are approached by patients 1–3 times per month to discuss genetics/genomics. Knowledge of genomics varies among chiropractors, yet 51% feel that teaching genomics is moderately (31%) or extremely (20%) important. Conclusion An introductory course in clinical genomics is necessary to prepare a chiropractor for patient care.
Objective The purpose of this study was to survey awareness of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, plus health disparities among complementary integrative health providers; chiropractors, naturopaths, acupuncturists, and massage therapists and secondly, examine how providers' sexual and gender identity correlated with that awareness. Methods An electronic survey was designed, which included demographic questions as well as closed-ended and Likert response items to measure provider awareness of LGBTQ+ patients and the health disparities they experience. Kruskal-Wallis H tests with pairwise comparisons were used to evaluate the differences between defined groups and their awareness of health disparities of LGBTQ+ adults and youth. Results The survey showed that most complementary integrative health care providers agreed that LGBTQ+ individuals experience discrimination and health disparities. However, providers are unaware of the specific disparities experienced in this population, including increased risk of substance abuse and mental health issues. Pairwise comparison tests demonstrated that providers that identify as a part of the LGBTQ+ community are often more aware of disparities than their heterosexual cisgender counterparts. Conclusion Complementary integrative health care providers demonstrated some general awareness of LGBTQ+ health disparities yet most providers lacked awareness of specific disparities that pose major health risks for this community. Cultural competency training specific to LGBTQ+ individuals is lacking and may explain some of the findings in this study. This suggests that education is needed, both in professional educational programs and in the health care community by way of conferences, webinars, and other opportunities.
