Samples of grade A Monel and grade A nickel were subjected statically in a single reactor to an undiluted atmosphere of gaseous fluorine at pressures up to one atmosphere absolute and temperatures up to 1500°F. The rate of consumption of fluorine on the mixed Monel and nickel saniples was followed by a press\ire-drop technique at 1100 and ISOO^F., but was found to be too rapid to be followed accurately at 1500''F. The grade A Monel was conservatively estimated to have consumed at least ^i-O times as much fluorine as the grade A nickel during the entire period of this exploratory investigation. Consequently, Monel metal was eliminated from further consideration as a material of construction for equipment exposed to fluorine at temperat\ires higher than 1300°F.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
