Hyperextension injury to the feline carpus usually results in disruption of the palmar ligament support at the level of the carpometacarpal joint. Treatment options include pancarpal or partial carpal arthrodesis. Partial carpal arthrodesis preserves range of motion of the antebrachiocarpal joint, and pronation and supination of the forearm. The surgical technique and three cases of partial carpal arthrodesis using medially applied mini-plates are described. Partial carpal arthrodesis of the feline carpus using medially applied mini-plates may be a safe and effective treatment for hyperextension injury to the carpometacarpal joints.

A 15-week-old Manx kitten was presented for evaluation of progressive hind limb paresis and ataxia. Spinal radiographs and computed tomography revealed a malformation of T3 causing thoracic spinal cord compression. Decompressive surgery consisting of dorsal laminectomy, without vertebral stabilisation, resulted in improvement of clinical signs.

A 12-year-old, female spayed crossbred dog was presented for traumatic injuries sustained after being hit by a car. The dog was non-ambulatory with a right-sided head tilt on presentation, neurological deficits and signs of external trauma centred on the head. A trauma computed tomography was performed which revealed an atlanto-occipital luxation with narrowing of the vertebral canal. This was treated successfully via closed reduction and confirmed with a repeat computed tomography scan. The dog recovered well following the atlanto-occipital luxation reduction, and was ambulatory the day after the reduction, and neurological signs resolved within 2 days.

HistoryA 4-month-old sexually intact male Great Dane was referred because of regurgitation since being acquired at 3 months of age. The frequency of regurgitation had historically been approximately 3 to 4 episodes/d but had increased dramatically over the 24 hours prior to referral, with 20 to 30 episodes of regurgitation and 1 episode of vomiting being reported. The regurgitated material was described as containing food, liquid, and foam, and episodes were not related to feedings. The dog' s appetite had always been good; however, the owners reported that the dog had been anorectic the morning of initial evaluation. Vaccination and deworming status were complete and current.Physical examination revealed a quiet but responsive puppy with a body condition score of 1 of 5. The dog was approximately 8% dehydrated with marked diffuse muscle wasting. Thoracic auscultation revealed tachycardia with a heart rate of 160 beats/min, but no murmur or arrhythmia was appreciated. Increased bronchovesicular lung sounds were present on auscultation of the right side of the thorax. Findings on abdominal palpation were unremarkable. The dog had 1 retained testis and was normothermic. Complete blood count and serum biochemistry analysis performed the day of initial evaluation revealed only moderate leukocytosis characterized by a neutrophilia with a left shift.
