One hundred neurotics, and one hundred relatives of the psychotic and neurotic patients were interviewed to assess their knowledge, beliefs, opinions, and expectations regarding the nature of the illness, causation. pathogenesis, investigations, and management of psychiatric ailments. Their views were gathered on issues like Religion, God, Spiritual possessions, Sin, Witchcraft, Slow poisoning. Evil eye, Fate, Food, Sex, Sleep, Modernization, Bhagawad Gita, Guru, Yoga, and Meditation along with the established factors like Heredity, Interpersonal relations, Drugs. Electrical treatments, Psychotherapy, and Freudian concepts. The analysis of the results showed the cultural gap between the patient and the ' therapist. The Implications of the results are discussed. A consideration of customer's view point in the development of indigenous paradigms of psychiatric treatment is emphasised.
