To evaluate the interactions between polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and reproductive hormones and associated asthma, a total of 231 asthmatic and 225 non-asthmatic adolescents were selected from northern Taiwan in the Genetic and Biomarkers study for Childhood Asthma from 2009-2010. The interaction between PFASs and reproductive hormones on asthma was analyzed with a two-level binary logistic regression model. The results showed that, among asthmatics, PFASs were positively associated with estradiol levels and negatively associated with testosterone levels. However, only significant association was identified for PFNA and estradiol in control group. After controlling for hormone levels, associations between PFAS exposure and asthma were consistently stronger among children with higher than lower estradiol, with odds ratios (OR) for asthma ranging from Asthma is an increasing new onset inflammatory disease that involves both intrinsic and environmental factors. Research indicates that perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), types of persistent organic pollutants, are associated with asthma and related outcomes, including airway hyperresponsiveness, increased serum levels of immunoglobulin E (IgE), and switched type 2 T helper cell (Th2) polarization 1-4 . Anderson-Mahoney et al. first identified the positive association between PFOA exposure and asthma 4 . US National Health and Examination Survey (NHANES) data showed that serum PFOA concentrations are positively associated with self-reported lifetime asthma prevalence 5 .
ObjectiveTo understand factors associated with community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) acquisition and infection, we mapped public places (including personal service establishments, fitness centers, pools, schools, and daycares) visited by members of households affected by CA-MRSA skin and soft tissue infection.ResultsFrom January 2012 to October 2015, households of children with CA-MRSA SSTI in metropolitan St. Louis were enrolled in the HOME: Household Observation of MRSA in the Environment study. Addresses of public places visited within 3 months of enrollment were reported by 671 participants and were analyzed using a geographic information system (GIS). The Nearest Neighbor Tool in ArcGIS assessed clustering of public places within the study region. Public places were significantly clustered within the study area compared to the expected distance between locations (p < 0.001). Additionally, one-third (48/150) of participating households visited at least one public place in common with other households. No significant relationship between participants visiting the public places within 3 months of enrollment and subsequent colonization or SSTI were found. Understanding community behavior is critical to informing public health initiatives to reduce the prevalence of CA-MRSA infections.
We surveyed 323 members of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society about their clinical practices for skin abscess management based on the 2011 Infectious Diseases Society of America guidelines and contemporary evidence. Despite this guideline and recent randomized trials, variability exists among pediatric infectious diseases clinicians in current skin and soft tissue infection management practices.
