Carl Rogers's nondirective theory and his response style with Gloria (E. L. Shostrom, 1965) are discussed in reply to S. A. Wickman and C. Campbell's (2003) “An Analysis of How Carl Rogers Enacted Client‐Centered Conversation With Gloria.” Client‐centered studies of C. Rogers's transcripts give context for reformulating S. A. Wickman and C. Campbell's “devices” (p. 179) in a manner consistent with C. Rogers's nondirective attitude. Awareness of varying views of C. Rogers's Gloria session as an example of his work can enrich training use of the film.
In Everett Shostrom's 1965 film, Three Approaches to Psychotherapy, Carl Rogers (Client-Centered Therapy), Fritz Perls (Gestalt Therapy) and Albert Ellis (Rational Emotive Therapy) conducted demonstration sessions with volunteer client Gloria. Now, in a book that is both biography and autobiography, one of Gloria's daughters, Pamela Burry, gives us Gloria's behindthe-scenes true-life story. The author of Living with ''The Gloria Films'': A daughter's memory is ''Pammy,'' whose existence first became known to many of us in her mother's unrehearsed opening session with Rogers. At that time, Gloria, a divorced mother of three children, raised questions about how real she should or should not be as a person in relationship with her children. She presented Rogers with her immediate dilemma: How honest should she be with her 9-year-old daughter about her sexual relations with men? Her quest for authenticity within herself, as well as in relationship with others, particularly with her children, is captured on celluloid and still viewed in university classrooms around the world. Pirated excerpts are available today on YouTube! Burry is a good writer, in fact, a poet. With compassion, humor, and natural pathos, she brings to life Gloria's history, pre-and postinterviews, and also the film's effects upon Gloria and her children. The story unfolds in the fascinating mix of California subdivision and the ''Age of Aquarius'' counterculture in the 1960's and 70's.Burry describes the climactic moment when Gloria was readying for work and she received a phone call:The look on her face tells me that she is torn between wanting to cry and needing to instill calm. She looks at me and says, ''Morning, honey. We've got a
