The aims of the study were to determine the most frequent grammatical errors made by students and their performance in a grammar test. Hence,183 diploma students from a local university were chosen to assist in this study. The instrument of the study was a final test consisting of two reading comprehension passages and a grammar section. For the purpose of the study, the students’ answers of the grammar section were analysed. The grammar section consists of 10 questions covering different parts of speech and tenses which were randomly chosen. It was found that the majority of the students’ performance in a grammar test is in the middle range. Most of them did not perform badly but neither did most of them excel at English grammar. Based on the findings there seemed to be a need for a more enhanced focus on the teaching and learning of English grammar for Malaysian ESL students. However, because this is a small study that examined only one batch of students, the results of this study may not be too significant for a more generalised conclusion. Thus, continuous study should be done with regard to aspects of grammar knowledge and its teaching and learning in Malaysia.
This paper aims to shed some light on the use of Speaking Contest as an Activity to support the learning of Mandarin among non-native Chinese learners. Speaking Contest as an Activity can be a useful tool to motivate the learning of Mandarin among learners. This study was carried out during a Mandarin speaking competition held at UiTM (Perlis). A self-developed questionnaire was distributed to gain understanding and the views of the participants on the use of Mandarin in the speaking contest as an activity to support the learning of a Chinese language among the non-native Chinese learners. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data. The findings revealed that students agreed that Mandarin speaking competition as an activity was useful to enhance their learning. Thus, activities such as Mandarin speaking contest can be used as creative practices in particular when teaching Mandarin as a foreign language and also for other foreign languages.
In recent years, the usage on cloud storage has grown, including students at tertiary level. Cloud storage helps students to store and share academic materials without additional costs. However, not many studies investigate on the students’ awareness level particularly in privacy related issues. This study examined the privacy awareness on cloud storage among students at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Kuala Terengganu. The study examined the students’ privacy awareness, through its level of agreement on the five elements which were cloud service awareness, privacy protection, risk analysis, security awareness and data availability participants. 90 respondents from three different programs were selected from the Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences (FSKM). An independent t-test and ANOVA test were conducted using SPSS. The results revealed that there was no significance difference between both genders on the privacy awareness on cloud storage. While, there was a significance difference amongst the three different programs in FSKM about privacy protection. This study concluded that these Computer Science degree students were concerned and aware about the privacy on the cloud storage, but they were not aware about the privacy related issues in the cloud storage.
In the Malay culture, a wedding invitation is regarded as one of the most essential parts of the nuptials. It does not only convey good news but also requests the presence of all relatives, friends and social acquaintances to gather at a certain place and time for solemnization and reception ceremonies. A wealth of research on patterns of wedding invitations has been conducted among various societies throughout the world. However, not much genre-analysis research relating to wedding invitations among the Malays can be found. Hence, the present preliminary study was conducted to explore various patterns of Malay written wedding invitations. Adopting the genre analysis model proposed by Swales, 60 samples of the Malay wedding invitation cards were analyzed in terms of move orders, obligatory and optional moves. The cards were randomly selected from a collection of invitations from 2015 to 2019. This study revealed that the Malays frequently employed seven generic moves in their written wedding invitations.
