Testing of software intended for safety-critical applications in commercial transport aircraft must achieve modified condition/decision coverage (MC/DC) of the software structure. This requirement causes anxiety for many within the aviation software community. Results of a survey of the aviation software industry indicate that many developers believe that meeting the MC/DC requirement is difficult, and the cost is exorbitant. Some of the difficulties stem, no doubt, from the scant information available on the subject. This paper provides a practical 5-step approach for assessing MC/DC for aviation software products, and an analysis of some types of errors expected to be caught when MC/DC is achieved 1 .
Use of unmanned aircraft systems (UASs) has been characterized as the next great step forward in the evolution of civil aviation. Indeed, UASs are in limited civil use in the United States today, and many believe that the time is rapidly approaching when they will move into the commercial marketplace, too. To make this a reality, a number of challenges must be overcome to develop the necessary regulatory framework for assuring safe operation of this special class of aircraft. This paper discusses some of what must be done to establish that framework. In particular, we examine hazards specific to the design, operation, and flight crew of UASs, and discuss implications of these hazards for existing policy and guidance. Understanding unique characteristics of UASs that pose new hazards is essential to developing a cogent argument, and the corresponding regulatory framework, for safely integrating these aircraft into civil airspace.
This paper presents some of the unique verification, validation, and certification challenges that must be addressed during the development of adaptive system software for use in safety-critical aerospace applications. The paper first discusses the challenges imposed by the current regulatory guidelines for aviation software. Next, a number of individual technologies being researched by NASA and others are discussed that focus on various aspects of the software challenges. These technologies include the formal methods of model checking, compositional verification, static analysis, program synthesis, and runtime analysis. Then the paper presents some validation challenges for adaptive control, including proving convergence over long durations, guaranteeing controller stability, using new tools to compute statistical error bounds, identifying problems in fault-tolerant software, and testing in the presence of adaptation. These specific challenges are presented in the context of a software validation effort in testing the Integrated Flight Control System (IFCS) neural control software at the Dryden Flight Research Center. Lastly, the challenges to develop technologies to help prevent aircraft system failures, detect and identify failures that do occur, and provide enhanced guidance and control capability to prevent and recover from vehicle loss of control are briefly cited in connection with ongoing work at the NASA Langley Research Center.
