Reflection indicates that there is a kinship between terms which designate, and concepts. A teacher would do much the same thing if he were teaching the concept of a rectangle as if he were teaching the meaning of the term rectangle. Accepting the risk of oversimplification, we suggest that a term is a name of the concept denoted by the term. It follows that defining a term is one way of teaching the concept denoted by the term.
It is both educationally sound, and intellectually refreshing to back off periodically and look at the process of education. We human beings are continually exercising one of our human frailties by losing perspective. Education and the teaching of mathematics, of course, continue whether we lose perspective and direction or not. Parents pay taxes, teachers teach and draw salaries, administrators administer, and students learn a lot of things. But all are convinced that education is “a rum go” if all those interested in it miss the forest for trees.
