Paraprofessionals can play an important role in the education of English language learners (ELLs). As potentially certified educators, they bring to the classroom qualities and experiences hard to find in graduates of traditional teacher‐preparation programs: extensive classroom experience, understanding of and commitment to the students they teach, intimate knowledge of the school and the community, and firsthand experience with social inequities. This entry will make the case for recruiting paraprofessionals into the teaching profession by (a) offering avenues for recruitment, (b) describing general features of programs that support paraprofessionals in teacher licensure programs with English as a second language (ESL) endorsements, and (c) providing a specific example of a successful teacher preparation program for paraprofessionals in the Pacific Northwest.
