Spectroscopic analysis of hemoglobin (Hb) and its derivatives (CO oximetry), in combination with blood gas analysis, provides valuable information about oxygen transport in human blood. In neonatal care, there is additional interest in monitoring bilirubin due to its potentially brain-damaging effect. The device presented herein permits the simultaneous determination of Hb derivatives and bilirubin from a single sample as small as 60 mL, thus eliminating the need for excessive blood collection from the newborn.
