There has been considerable discussion in the educational press about quality, competence and standards in education at a time when preregistration education for our various professions has moved into the higher education (HE) sector. Managers in the health sector are rightly concerned that the ‘output’ from the various undergraduate programmes meets the needs of the service to be provided. Can newly qualified practitioners do the job they want them to do? Are they clinically competent?
