Background: Alcohol Use Disorder is highly prevalent in India. Alcohol acts as a continuous stressor, with several stressful consequences on the wife. Literature suggests an association between alcohol use in the husband and depression in the wife. Objectives: The primary objective was to assess the prevalence of Major Depressive Disorder(MDD) among wives of men with Alcohol Use Disorder attending the Psychiatry Department in a tertiary care centre. The secondary objective was to assess various sociodemographic and clinical variables associated with depressive disorder in the wives. Methods: A cross-sectional study was done on wives of men diagnosed with Alcohol Use Disorder while attending the outpatient clinic or inpatient treatment at the Psychiatry Department. Consecutive sampling was done till the calculated sample size of 133 was reached. PHQ 9 was administered to the wives to assess Depressive Disorder with a cutoff score of 10. Statistical analysis was done using the Chi-square test. Odds Ratio and confidence intervals were calculated to determine the strength of associations. Results: Prevalence of Major Depressive Disorder in the study population was found to be 27.8%. A significant association was found between the severity of Alcohol Use Disorder and depression in wives (OR=4.01,95%CI=1.4411.22, p<0.01). Morning drinking among husbands was significantly associated with depression in wives(OR=4.32,95%CI=1.32-19.56, p=0.04). Conclusion: Prevalence of Major Depressive Disorder among wives of men with Alcohol Use Disorder was high. Depressive disorder in wives significantly correlated with the severity of Alcohol Use Disorder and the husbands' morning drinking. Hence wives of men with Alcohol Use Disorder should be routinely screened for depression, and necessary interventions should be given promptly.
Body awareness (BA) has long been associated with different psychopathologies like depressive disorders and anxiety disorders in varying amount. Improving BA has been suggested as an approach for treating patients with conditions such as chronic pain, obesity and post-traumatic stress disorder. Mindfulness-based Interventions (MBIs) have been found to increase BA resulting in enhanced wellbeing. Mindfulness has a role in enhancing positive outcomes in several important life domains including mental health, physical health, behavioural regulation and interpersonal relationships and in curtailing negative functioning The current observational study attempts to assess and compare the Body Awareness Questionnaire (BAQ) scores and Mindfulness level among police personnel before and 6 weeks after attending the MLM workshop. The present study showed an increase of BAQ score increased and significant relation to Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ) Score. Correlation between the change in Operational Stress and BAQ was statistically significant at p <.01 The present study has suggested that MLM can be useful intervention to enhance BA. The significance shown through correlation of change in operational stress and BAQ score shows that enhancing BA can help to reduce stress in individuals through MLM intervention. The present study provides preliminary evidence for MBI in enhancing BA from our part of the country. Inspite of the limitations described elsewhere and the limited sample size, the study can be considered as an add on evidence on the effectiveness of MLM in enhancing BA.
Psychiatry of the 21st century is also characterized by ramication into various specialized branches. Revolutions in the areas of psychopharmacology, psychotherapies and social therapies have become a routine in the eld of psychiatry. Mindfulness is one concept spanning across the bio-psycho-social realms which continues to be a topic of current interest both for the professionals as well as the lay public since more than 5 decades. Two of the most common among them are Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, a stress management model by Jon Kabat Zinn and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy , a mindfulness based model devised to prevent the relapse of depression6, by John Teasdale, Mark Williams and Zindel Segal. Several countries in the world have their own MBIs like Mindfulness Integrated Cognitive Behaviour therapy by Bruno Cayoun8. India also has its own share of MBIs in the form of Mindful Life Management 9 and Mindfulness Unied Cognitive Behaviour Therapy 10 developed by the author, though research evidences are only getting accumulated. MBIs aim to enhance greater attention to and awareness of present moment experience12. MBIs have been found to be of use in realms of health, cognitive, affective and interpersonal relationships. Various other factors related to MBIs like psychological and neurobiological mechanisms and potential risks also have been studied by several authors. Neurobiological effects of MBIs have been reported as functional and structural alterations in grey and white matter, especially in areas related to attention and memory, interoception and sensory processing, or self- and auto-regulation of stress and emotions. Amidst all these researches happening in different parts of the world, India didn't have any structured MBIs of its own till the end of the rst decade of 21st century, until the development of Mindful Life Management and Mindfulness Unied Cognitive Behavior Therapy by the author. This article covers the work being done by mindfulness researchers during the rst two decades of the 21st century
