The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) is a world-wide leading organisation in the field of particle physics and operation of high-class particle accelerators. Since 2013, CERN has undertaken feasibility investigations for a particle accelerator, named Future Circular Collider (FCC) to be installed within a 90-100 km subsurface infrastructure likely to enter construction phase after 2030. An important aspect of its construction and environmental impact assessment is the management of approximately 9.1 million m 3 of excavated rock and soil. The aim of this paper is to thoroughly review the applications of excavated material across European subsurface construction projects from a technical point of view and set them into context with studies currently ongoing for FCC. We propose a conceptual flow model for rock characterisation with respect to both applicability of excavated material and tunnelling excavation techniques for future international subsurface construction projects.The review has revealed a vast and encouraging potential across different European construction sites efficiently using excavated rock and soil over the past decade ranging from concrete production, geopolymer production, embankment and landfilling. Examples of reviewed subsurface tunnelling projects are likely to be applied for FCC including concrete production, clay-sealing for embankments, geopolymer face stabilization, recultivation or agricultural usage as mixed soil material or sustainable waste disposal.
Large buildings (towers, large slabs, etc.) dating from 1965 to 1974 are one of the five main targets of the Agence Nationale de la Rénovation Urbaine (French National Agency for Urban Renewal), which has used demolition as a privileged tool of intervention in large social housing complexes (grands ensembles) and degraded condominiums since the early 2000s. Using a corpus of grands ensembles in the urban area of Lyon of interest to the national programme of urban renewal, we sought to verify the intentions displayed at the national level; this urban area has indeed been at the forefront of concerns regarding 'city policy' since the early 1980s and can be considered emblematic of national policies in this area. We simultaneously examined the methods used to demolish these towers and bars, from explosive demolition to mechanical means. Given their monumentality, these buildings are most restrictive at the technical level, and the means by which the demolition occurs are viewed with the greatest attention, as decision-makers are most vigilant regarding their effects on the inhabitants and on public opinion. The demolition of these high-rise buildings can be analysed in light of technical and normative evolutions (security, recycling) as well as their political and ideological meanings.
Enseignants mais aussi artiste et chercheuse, nous avons conçu un dispositif pédagogique d’éducation au développement durable et à l’éco-citoyenneté, centré sur des « boîtes à enquête ». Dans ce dispositif, les élèves sont amenés, à partir d’objets sensibles (pièces radiophoniques, images, sculptures), à s’interroger sur la notion d’Anthropocène – volontairement mobilisée –, puis à engager une enquête documentaire et de terrain. L’objectif est double : donner une place à la rêverie (Bachelard) comme moyen d’accéder à un autre régime de connaissance, et engager les élèves dans l’action (pouvoir d’agir) face aux spécificités de l’époque Anthropocène. Le projet repose sur la formation des enseignants afin qu’ils mènent le projet dans leur propre classe. L’article présente le dispositif pédagogique et propose de premiers retours d’expérience à partir de ces trois premières années de mise en œuvre dans des écoles.
