ObjectivesThis scoping review aims to facilitate psychometric developments in the field of digital media usage and well-being in young people by (1) identifying core concepts in the area of “screen time” and digital media use in children, adolescents, and young adults, (2) synthesising existing research paradigms and measurement tools that quantify these dimensions, and (3) highlighting important areas of need to guide future measure development.DesignA scoping review of 140 sources (126 database, 14 grey literature) published between 2014 and 2019 yielded 162 measurement tools across a range of domains, users, and cultures. Database sources from Ovid MEDLINE, PsycINFO and Scopus were extracted, in addition to grey literature obtained from knowledge experts and organisations relevant to digital media use in children. To be included, the source had to: (1) be an empirical investigation or present original research, (2) investigate a sample/target population that included children or young persons between the ages of 0 and 25 years of age, and (3) include at least one assessment method for measuring digital media use. Reviews, editorials, letters, comments and animal model studies were all excluded.MeasuresBasic information, level of risk of bias, study setting, paradigm, data type, digital media type, device, usage characteristics, applications or websites, sample characteristics, recruitment methods, measurement tool information, reliability and validity.ResultsSignificant variability in nomenclature surrounding problematic use and criteria for identifying clinical impairment was discovered. Moreover, there was a paucity of measures in key domains, including tools for young children, whole families, disadvantaged groups, and for certain patterns and types of usage.ConclusionThis knowledge synthesis exercise highlights the need for the widespread development and implementation of comprehensive, multi-method, multilevel, and multi-informant measurement suites.
Objective Although a relationship between schizophrenia (SCZ), antipsychotic (AP) medication, and metabolic dysregulation is now well established, the effect of adiposity is less well understood. By synthesizing findings from imaging techniques that measure adiposity, our systematic review and meta‐analysis (PROSPERO CRD42020192977) aims to determine the adiposity‐related effects of illness and treatment in this patient population. Methods We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsychINFO and Scopus for all relevant case‐control and prospective longitudinal studies from inception until February 2021. Measures of adiposity including percent body fat (%BF), subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) were analyzed as primary outcomes. Results Our search identified 29 articles that used imaging methods to quantify adiposity among patients with SCZ spectrum disorders. Analyses revealed that patients have greater %BF (mean difference (MD) = 3.09%; 95% CI: 0.75–5.44), SAT (MD = 24.29 cm2; 95% CI: 2.97–45.61) and VAT (MD = 33.73 cm2, 95% CI: 4.19–63.27) compared to healthy controls. AP treatment was found to increase SAT (MD = 31.98 cm2; 95% CI: 11.33–52.64) and VAT (MD = 16.30 cm2; 95% CI: 8.17–24.44) with no effect on %BF. However, change in %BF was higher for AP‐free/AP‐naïve patients compared to treated patients. Conclusion Our findings indicate that patients with SCZ spectrum disorders have greater adiposity than healthy controls, which is increased by AP treatment. Young, AP‐naïve patients may be particularly susceptible to this effect. Future studies should explore the effect of specific APs on adiposity and its relation to overall metabolic health.
The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in major stressors such as unemployment, financial insecurity, sickness, separation from family members, and isolation for much of the world population. These stressors have been linked to mental health difficulties for parents and caregivers. Religion and spirituality (R/S), on the other hand, is often viewed as promotive of mental health. However, the mechanisms by which R/S might promote mental health for parents during the pandemic remain unclear. Thus, this longitudinal study explores how R/S is associated with better caregiver mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic through higher levels of positive coping skills. A sample of N = 549 caregivers (parents and other adults in childrearing roles) across Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia were recruited through the Prolific® research panel [67.8% female; age M = 41.33 years (SD = 6.33), 72.3% White/European]. Participants were assessed on measures of psychological distress, coping, R/S, and COVID-19 disruption at three time points between May and November 2020. Cross-lagged panel analysis revealed that caregiver coping mediated the relationship between caregiver R/S and caregiver mental health. Findings highlight a mechanism through which R/S naturally conveys a mental health benefit during periods of social disruption, which may provide an important target for public health promotion and clinical intervention.
Montag, Wegmann, Sariyska, Demetrovics, and Brand (2019) propose an important framework surrounding the taxonomy of problematic internet usage, with particular applications to disentangling the role of mobile and other handheld devices versus stationary platforms. This is a critical contribution, as organizational frameworks have begun to move past “whether” there is disordered internet use, and towards better understanding the complex and multifaceted ways in which internet usage can be related to psychological maladjustment. In the present commentary, we encourage authors to extend this framework by incorporating developmental complexities. Montag and colleagues' (2019) contribution is discussed with reference to children and families, including: (1) the conceptualization of problematic internet usage and associated behaviors across the early years, (2) the types of internet use and devices that are most salient for young users, (3) the embedding of children's internet consumption within the context of a broader pattern of family media usage, and (4) the construct of behavioral addictions in pediatric populations. Recommendations for science and practice are briefly discussed.
