This thesis investigates the adoption of digital platforms by incumbent firms and the reasons why they might fail. It starts with a review of how platforms are evolving due to digitization and why that matters to incumbents. Based on data from leading car manufacturers, the study derives characteristics of platform business models adopted by incumbents and explains how these characteristics relate to failures. A Delphi study with experts in the automotive industry is presented to further explain factors leading to failure. As result, the thesis introduces an integrative model on failures in digital platforms by incumbents, their causes and consequences.
