Aim To infer areas of endemism for the tribe Oryzomyini in South America by employing a database of species richness and geographical distribution, and to compare these results with areas of endemism and species richness proposed in the literature for other taxa. Location We analysed specimens of the tribe Oryzomyini distributed throughout South and Central America, which are housed in European, North and South American museums and collections. Methods We analysed 2768 occurrence records for 102 species of the tribe Oryzomyini using the ndm/vndm algorithm and three different grid sizes to assess the possible effects of grid cell area on the results. Results Using the overlap of consensus areas in South America, we identified three generalized areas of endemism for the Oryzomyini: north‐western South America (NWSA), eastern South American (ESA), and northern South America (NSA); we also identified the Galápagos archipelago (GA) as an area of endemism. Main conclusions Areas of endemism detected in the continental portion of South America include its three main mountain chains: the Andes Cordillera, the Guyanan Shields, and an area east of the Brazilian Shield named Serra do Mar. Each of these regions encompasses many different types of vegetation, and the species richness and composition of the areas of endemism of the tribe are directly related to this environmental diversity. Different grid sizes affected the distributional heterogeneity of the consensus areas. The smallest grid cell size identified mainly Andean areas, which contain a higher number of more exclusive species in a small area along a steep elevational gradient. In contrast, the largest grid size identified areas of endemism along an environmental gradient that co‐varied with latitude and longitude. The identified areas of endemism are corroborated by previous studies on other taxa.
Xenarthrans—anteaters, sloths, and armadillos—have essential functions for ecosystem maintenance, such as insect control and nutrient cycling, playing key roles as ecosystem engineers. Because of habitat loss and fragmentation, hunting pressure, and conflicts with domestic dogs, these species have been threatened locally, regionally, or even across their full distribution ranges. The Neotropics harbor 21 species of armadillos, 10 anteaters, and 6 sloths. Our data set includes the families Chlamyphoridae (13), Dasypodidae (7), Myrmecophagidae (3), Bradypodidae (4), and Megalonychidae (2). We have no occurrence data on Dasypus pilosus (Dasypodidae). Regarding Cyclopedidae, until recently, only one species was recognized, but new genetic studies have revealed that the group is represented by seven species. In this data paper, we compiled a total of 42,528 records of 31 species, represented by occurrence and quantitative data, totaling 24,847 unique georeferenced records. The geographic range is from the southern United States, Mexico, and Caribbean countries at the northern portion of the Neotropics, to the austral distribution in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. Regarding anteaters, Myrmecophaga tridactyla has the most records (n = 5,941), and Cyclopes sp. have the fewest (n = 240). The armadillo species with the most data is Dasypus novemcinctus (n = 11,588), and the fewest data are recorded for Calyptophractus retusus (n = 33). With regard to sloth species, Bradypus variegatus has the most records (n = 962), and Bradypus pygmaeus has the fewest (n = 12). Our main objective with Neotropical Xenarthrans is to make occurrence and quantitative data available to facilitate more ecological research, particularly if we integrate the xenarthran data with other data sets of Neotropical Series that will become available very soon (i.e., Neotropical Carnivores, Neotropical Invasive Mammals, and Neotropical Hunters and Dogs). Therefore, studies on trophic cascades, hunting pressure, habitat loss, fragmentation effects, species invasion, and climate change effects will be possible with the Neotropical Xenarthrans data set. Chironectes minimus is a marsupial with unique morphological and ecological characteristics. Owing mainly to its semi-aquatic habits, it is rarely collected by conventional methods, being consequently underrepresented in scientific collections. Its distribution in South America is currently considered disjunct, with a north-west and a south-east portion, and a large gap of more than one thousand kilometers that comprises central Amazonia and a large portion of the Cerrado. On the basis of four museum specimens and two photographed live animals, we present six new records for the species. These records extend the species' distribution, showing that its range is continuous from southern Amazonia and through Cerrado gallery forests, to the southern portion of its range in southeastern South America. Most known records of C. minimus are from preserved riparian forests that usually present certain characteristics, such as fast-flowing water, stony substrate, and/or natural holes used as dens. Therefore, we hypothesize that the occurrence of this species is more closely related to well-preserved riparian forests containing these types of habitats than to the biomes themselves. Consequently, this species is probably found through most tropical and subtropical South American biomes that present the aforementioned habitat types. Therefore, the previous distributional gap of the species, now filled on its central-east portion, was probably a sampling artifact.
The geographic distribution of Cabassous unicinctus is poorly known due to the low number of available records. Two subspecies with distributions limited by the Amazonas River were recognized in 1980. Cabassous u. unicinctus has been found north of this river, while C. u. squamicaudis occurs in areas south of the river. This study aimed to update the distribution records of C. u. unicinctus in Brazil. We compiled records from literature, museum collections and field studies. New records of this subspecies were obtained from the Brazilian states of Acre, Pará, Rondônia and Mato Grosso. These records enlarge a geographic distribution of C. u. unicinctus to Amazonian and Cerrado biomes, regions located south of the Amazon River.
