Pure organic molecules exhibiting a suitable concave rigid shape are expected to give porous glasses in the solid state. Such a feature opens new opportunities to avoid crystallization and to improve molecular solubility in relation to the high internal energy of these solid phases. To quantitatively explore the latter strategy, a series of rigid tetrahedral conjugated molecules nC and the corresponding models nR have been synthesized. Related to the present purpose, several properties have been investigated using UV absorption, steady-state fluorescence emission, differential scanning calorimetry, (1)H NMR translational self-diffusion, magic angle spinning (13)C NMR, and multiple-beam interferometry experiments. The present tetrahedral crosses are up to 8 orders of magnitude more soluble than the corresponding model compounds after normalization to the same molecular length. In addition, they give concentrated monomeric solutions that can be used to cover surfaces with homogeneous films whose thickness goes down to the nanometer range. Such attractive features make cross-like molecular architectures promising for many applications.
We examined associations between outdoor air pollution and childhood asthma, using measures of SES, neighborhood quality and social support from the Los Angeles Family and Neighborhood Survey (LA FANS). We linked residential census tracts for 3,114 children to government air monitoring stations and estimated average pollutant concentrations for the year before interview. CO and NO 2 levels increased and O 3 levels decreased as neighborhood quality decreased, yet correlations were low. Pollutant levels were not correlated with neighborhood support. Even after adjustment for social environment characteristics, LA FANS children living in high O 3 , PM 10 , and CO areas appeared to have worse asthma morbidity.
Intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS) can improve the physical layer security (PLS) by providing a controllable wireless environment. In this paper, we propose a novel PLS technique with the help of IRS implemented by an intelligent mirror array for the visible light communication (VLC) system. First, for the IRS aided VLC system containing an access point (AP), a legitimate user and an eavesdropper, the IRS channel gain and a lower bound of the achievable secrecy rate are derived. Further, to enhance the IRS channel gain of the legitimate user while restricting the IRS channel gain of the eavesdropper, we formulate an achievable secrecy rate maximization problem for the proposed IRS-aided PLS technique to find the optimal orientations of mirrors. Since the sensitivity of mirrors' orientations on the IRS channel gain makes the optimization problem hard to solve, we transform the original problem into a reflected spot position optimization problem and solve it by a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. Our simulation results show that secrecy performance can be significantly improved by adding an IRS in a VLC system.
MicroRNA (miR)-19b is part of the miR-17-92 cluster associated with cardiac development. Here, we investigated the effects of overexpressing miR-19b on proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and regulation of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway in the multipotent murine P19 cell line that can be induced to undergo cardiogenesis. P19 cells were transfected with the miR-19b plasmid or empty vector, and miR-19b overexpression was verified by Quantitative Real-Time PCR (qPCR). The miR-19b or vector control stable cell lines were selected using Blasticidin S HCl, and their proliferation, cell cycle, and apoptosis levels were analyzed using the Cell Counting Kit-8 and flow cytometry. P19 cell differentiation markers, apoptosis-related genes (bax, bcl-2), and Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway-related genes were detected by qPCR, the corresponding proteins by Western blot. Expression of the Wnt pathway and differentiation marker proteins was also verified by immunofluorescence. Morphological changes associated with apoptosis were observed by electron microscopy and Hoechst staining. On the basis of these results, we demonstrated that miR-19b overexpression promoted proliferation and differentiation but inhibited apoptosis in P19 cells; Wnt and β-catenin expressions were decreased, while that of GSK3β was increased with miR-19b overexpression. Overexpression of miR-19b inhibited activation of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway in P19 cells, which may regulate cardiomyocyte differentiation. Our findings may bring new insights into the mechanisms underlying cardiac diseases and suggest that miR-19b is a potential new therapeutic target for cardiovascular diseases.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
