The authors explore the complexities of human dignity, analyze human dignity as a concept and its position within the framework of today's social work practices. In this regard, the authors ponder upon diverse understanding of human dignity, including human dignity as a socio-legal value and its importance to social work in general and to other principal values relevant for social work. They examine the evolution of social work approaches towards human dignity while focusing on social work related international organizations and their national members' and partners' work to promote and uphold human dignity in delivery processes of social services.
This article is theoretical and empirical. The theoretical part presents issues related to experiencing stress (including ways of coping with experienced problems) and the relationships between preference for various coping strategies and human behavior. The empirical part presents the results of research on the relationship between the frequency of seniors (n = 329) using 13 different ways to deal with experienced difficulties (including the strategy of turning to religion/religious coping) and 11 categories of aggressive behavior (retaliation tendencies, self-destructive tendencies, aggression control disorders, displaced aggression, unconscious aggressive tendencies, indirect aggression, instrumental aggression, self-hostility, physical aggression towards the environment, hostility towards the environment, and reactive aggression). The last part is devoted to a discussion on the obtained research results and the practical implications of using the strategy of turning to religion/religious coping in difficult situations as a factor protecting the elderly from aggressive behavior.
The authors undertake a thorough analysis of the sociological concepts of suffering, emotion, and affect in the context of cancer as a disease of civilization. To that end, firstly, they explore the social logic of care and the gift in order to embark on the n. of the social relation between a designation of cancer as a disease of civilization and the development of modern societies. The authors examine the place and perception of cancer-affected persons and groups in societies of today. Subsequently, they analyze the sociological concepts of suffering, emotion, and affect while exploring a wide range of n.s related, among others, to the sociology of health, including in reference to particular situations of persons affected by cancer. In addition, the authors examine the significance of informal caregivers and the popularity of end-life care institutions for cancer patients.
