(Fuente: DeCS) SUMMARY Objective: To evaluate the effect of Allium sativum L. extract on the efficacy of metformin treatment in Rattus norvegicus strain Holtzman with diabetes mellitus induced by aloxane. Material and methods: A randomized experimental study was carried out, where 48 Holtzman rats and alloxan were used as an inducer of diabetes mellitus. The specimens were divided into four groups: Group 0 (G0): Without any treatment (control); Group 1 (G1): extract of Allium sativum L. 500 mg / kg; Group 2 (G2): metformin 100 mg / kg; Group 3 (G3): Extract of Allium sativum L. 500 mg / kg plus metformin 100 mg / kg. The substances were administered orally for twenty-eight consecutive days, in which blood samples were obtained by glucometry. Results: A statistically significant difference was found (p<0,05) by means of the ANOVA test between the control group (G0) and the experimental ones (G1, G2 and G3). The Duncan test showed a significant difference between the G2 and G3 groups (p <0.05). Conclusions: The extract of Allium sativum L. had an enhancing effect on metformin in Rattus norvegicus strain Holtzman with Diabetes Mellitus induced by aloxan.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
