The germination and seedling root development trials have been used to evaluate and quantify the toxicity of watersoluble compounds as well as mixtures of complex substances, leached, among others. The objective was to evaluate the impact of leached and solubilized extracts of coffee waste on the germination and development of cabbage seedlings ( B. oleracea var. Capitata), as well as to evaluate the physical and chemical properties of these extracts. The extracts were prepared according to the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards 10.005 and 10.006, respectively. The experimental design had 7 treatments for the test group (leached), 7 treatments for the test group (solubilized) and one control group.The control group was composed of 4 mL distilled water. It was verified that from the lowest dosage administered (0.1 mL) there was an inhibition in the germination of 30% for both extracts. Starting the dose with 0.7 mL of leached, no root growth was observed. The determination of LOEC was established in the treatments with 0.1 mL for both extracts.
Vegetable oils were widely used for food production at different levels: domestic, commercial or industrial. Due to the improper discharge of its remainings in the sewage system, they becom potentially polluting for water resources and can cause many problems to wastewater treatment plants operation, provoking efficiency loss and increasing operational costs. The objective of this work was to evaluate the impact of four vegetable oils (soy, corn, canola and sunflower) on germination and development of lettuce seeds (Lactuca sativa L.). The experimental design had 7 treatments for the test group (oils) and 1 control group. The control group was composed of 4 mL deionized water. At the end of 120 h (5 days), the following parameters were evaluated: number of germinated seeds and length of rootlets. It was verified a negative effect on the germination rate and root growth as a function of the increase of the doses. Starting the dose with 0.1 mL of oil, was observed inhibition in rate of germination and root growth. All the oils studied were equally impacting to the parameters of seed germination and root growth of lettuce seeds.
Earthworms are one of the organisms used in ecotoxicity tests. The species (Eisenia fetida) is the most common. This preference is due to its ability to poorly convert chemically broken organic wastes into stabilized material. This work aimed to investigate the earthworm avoidance response, simulating the inappropriate disposal of this residue in soil, besides identifying the pH of these samples after the avoidance test. For this experiment we worked with two groups.The test group, used percentages of the coffee waste added to the mass of sandy and loamy soil. It can be seen that there are excessively high prevention and control measures in the disposal of petroleum residues and agricultural agrochemicals than in coffee waste. Therefore, these results highlight the importance of greater control and prevention of inappropriate coffee waste disposal. However, although the limiting dosage for earthworms was significantly higher than that of the other pollutants observed (10% sandy soil and 5% loamy soil), and because it was a solid residue of organic origin, the coffe waste also rendered soil unsuitable for habitat of the earthworms.
