Non-Hispanic black adults have the highest percentage of low cardiovascular fitness among major race groups in the United States. On a population basis, over one third of non-Hispanic black women have low cardiovascular fitness, suggesting this group in particular may be at increased health risk due to poor fitness.
BackgroundAlthough current guidelines emphasize the importance of hypertension knowledge, little is known about accuracy of this knowledge, factors affecting accuracy and the relationship of self-reported hypertension with cardiovascular disease (CVD).MethodsOne hundred and forty seven subjects were asked to provide self-reported data on hypertension.ResultsThese were correlated with levels of systolic and diastolic hypertension measures. Demographic characteristics were considered as determinants of awareness and accuracy. Women were more likely than men to be aware of their hypertension levels. However men were more likely to exercise, use salt, smoke and consume alcohol. Women were more likely to be hypertensive, nonsmokers, and moderate drinkers. Higher levels of self-reported hypertension were strongly associated with increased risk of CVD. Women that smoke, have untreated hypertension, or a sedentary lifestyle have a decrease in awareness of their hypertension levels.ConclusionsSelf-reported hypertension underestimates measured values, but is strongly related to CVD. The objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness and acceptance of Web-based (WB) versus face-to-face (FF) lecturing. There were 48 soldiers stationed at Fort Bragg, NC who completed the study, participating in either a Web-based or face-to-face lecture on nutrition for performance. The lecture was 30 minutes long. Participants completed a prequiz and survey before the lecture and a postquiz and survey at its conclusion. Results showed there was no difference in the effectiveness of the two mediums on the basis of postquiz scores (Web-based group = 75.68; face-to-face group = 73.27; p = 0.436). Change in scores from pre to post also showed no difference between the two groups (p = 0.375). Assessing the acceptance of the two teaching mediums, there was no significant difference reported, except for the instructor's ability to answer questions (p = 0.05). The conclusion of this study is that Web-based learning can be an effective and acceptable tool for registered dietitians to educate soldiers on nutrition for performance.
