Contests in the animal world to determine social status almost exclusively involve males, which points out that androgens may be indispensable in the development of competitive instincts. In animal studies, it has been shown that prenatal exposure to androgens may produce permanent changes toward more aggressive behavior in adulthood. Thus, there is a strong suspicion that women involved in competitive activities, such as sports, may have been exposed to high androgen levels in utero. There is strong evidence that the ratio between the second to fourth digits ratio (2D:4D ratio) correlates negatively with intrauterine androgen concentrations and could potentially be used as a marker for prenatal androgen exposure. Therefore, the purpose of our study was to test the hypothesis that women engaged in sports have lower 2D:4D ratio-a marker of high prenatal androgen exposure. We measured the 2D:4D ratios in elite and non-elite female athletes and compared them with female individuals not engaged in any sport activities. Our results showed that elite female athletes have significantly lower left hand 2D:4D ratios compared to the control group (P < 0.05). Therefore, we can speculate that low 2D:4D ratio may be a positive correlate of sports potential in females.

Background: Regulatory mechanisms of metabolic homeostasis undergo important alterations during ageing. The age-related changes become often evident only during stimulation of basic functions that occurs, e.g. during fasting and refeeding which represent natural challenge to energy metabolism. Objective: To determine the effect of short-term fasting and subsequent refeeding on serum levels of key hormones and metabolites in young adult 5- and 24-month-old male Wistar rats. Methods: Control rats were fed ad libitum. Animals were fasted for 48 h or fasted and refed for 24 h. Metabolite serum concentrations were measured by standard methods. Leptin and insulin were determined by rat-specific RIA, and adiponectin serum levels by mouse/rat–specific ELISA. Results: (1) Control serum levels of key metabolites and hormones were similar in both age groups except for increased triglycerides (TG) in old fed rats. (2) Fasting caused a significant decrease of leptin, insulin, glucose, and TG serum levels in both age groups, and an increase of free fatty acids (FFA) concentration, however, only in young animals. (3) Upon refeeding serum glucose, TG and insulin reversed to control levels in both age groups, however, FFA concentration decreased to control values only in young rats. (4) In contrast to young animals, refeeding of old rats did not increase serum leptin concentration to control level. (5) Neither fasting nor refeeding changed adiponectin serum levels in both age groups. Conclusion: Aging suppresses leptin secretion and metabolism of FFA during refeeding that follows short-term starvation. In old rats serum levels of FFA are refractive to the alterations induced by fasting/refeeding in young ones.
The assessment of characteristic body features of Miss Poland beauty contest finalists compared with the control group, can contribute to recognising the contemporary ideal of beauty promoted by the mass media. The studies of Playboy models and fashion models conducted so far have been limited to the following determinants of attractiveness: body mass index, waist:hip ratio, and waist:chest ratio, which only partially describe the body shape. We compared 20 body features of the finalists of Miss Poland 2004 beauty contest with those of the students of Medical Academy in Bydgoszcz. Discriminant analysis showed that the thigh girth-height index, waist: chest ratio, height, and body mass index had the greatest discrimination power distinguishing the two groups. A model of Miss Poland finalists figure assessment is presented which allows one to distinguish super-attractive women from the control group.
The second to fourth digit ratio (2D:4D) is used as a potential marker for prenatal androgen exposure. It is associated with many behavioral and biological variables, including fertility and sexual behavior. However, direct association between 2D:4D and reproductive success—in populations where no contraceptives are used—has not been investigated. Here, we present a study conducted among the semi-nomad Himba population living in northern Namibia. 2D:4D ratios were calculated for a sample of this population (N = 99; 60 women, 39 men), and the results were correlated with age, marital status, age at first marriage, number of children, and number of marriages. As found in the majority of previous studies, males had lower 2D:4D ratios than females. The 2D:4D ratio did not correlate with number of children. Females and males with a more masculine 2D:4D were married earlier and were more likely to have a husband or wife. We suggest that mating preferences for females with masculine 2D:4D are related to masculinity of phenotypic and personality traits of such women, which are beneficial in harsh environmental conditions and/or higher facial masculinity, which influences the perceived age of an individual. At the same time, masculine (physically strong, dominant, and hardworking) males might gather resources necessary to marry their first wife earlier.
