This research focuses on the state of Yucatan, Mexico, and provides evidence of unsustainable performance of the local economy: the local economic structure and income distribu- The objectives of sustainable development (OSD) include a set of actions that are implemented in an articulated way leading to the overcoming of poverty, reduction of inequality, creation of quality employment opportunities and conservation of natural resources, among other purposes (UNDP, 2016). The challenge for governments of subnational countries and regions is to determine how to implement this set of actions to generate continuous development processes in a complex and dynamic context in the geographical space of a particular territory. This article analyses the situation of female gender with regard to the educational backwardness, during the period of 19902010, in Yucatan and Mexico. For achieve this, the data of educational backwardness between women, men and the population as a whole are compared according to age and instruction levels in that period, within the corresponding territories. In addition, in recent years, the indicators of declining educational backwardness are introduced in order to provide an overview of the evolution of the educational system in Yucatan, Mexico. The results show that the high levels of educational backwardness among women in Yucatan persist at all levels of instruction and different ranges of age, but especially at the secondary school level and the population aged 60 and over, despite the progress made in this field in recent decades.Keywords: Educational Backwardness; Gender Condition; Inequality between MenWomen.El artículo analiza cómo el género femenino se encuentra en situación de retraso educativo en el periodo 19902010 en Yucatán y en México. Para lograr lo anterior, se comparan los datos de retraso educativo entre mujeres, hombres y el total de la población, por nivel de instrucción y por rango de edad en el periodo citado y en los ámbitos territoriales correspondientes. Además, se introducen indicadores de disminución de retraso educativo con el fin de presentar un panorama de la evolución del sistema educativo en Yucatán México en años recientes. Los resultados demuestran que en Yucatán México persisten altos niveles de retraso educativo entre las mujeres en todos los niveles de instrucción y en los distintos rangos de edad, pero sobre todo en el nivel secundaria y en la población de 60 años y más, pese a los avances registrados en la materia en las últimas décadas.
