Providing leadership education for young men growing up without their father, through a structured curriculum and mentoring program, should enhance their development. To examine this, the authors interviewed adult alumni who participated as adolescents in a cohort-based, sixmonth leadership program. Interviews outlined several key themes: once served by others the young men desired to serve their community, choosing an authentic leadership educator matters, program mentors inspired positive life changes, and the learned leadership lessons transcended the setting and the curriculum. This qualitative project examined the efficacy of a youth leadership development program by interviewing past participants. This research outlined how service to others can inspire more service and that leadership education has the potential to alter lives, and in this case, even save lives.
Complex and adaptive challenges threaten human well-being and sustainability. However, our leadership graduates often lack the capacity and or commitment to address these challenges in a meaningful way. This paper details a five-year study exploring the impact of an interdisciplinary undergraduate course on the development of global capacities, complex Adaptive Leadership, Socially Responsible Agency, and systems thinking. The course instructors used innovative and intentionally divergent learning methods to challenge students to serve as stewards of their own knowledge and facilitators of their own learning through the confrontation of authentic and complex challenges. The researchers note transferable qualitative findings that demonstrate the profound impact of the noted leadership learning experience on the development of Socially Responsible Agency, along with Adaptive Leadership capacity and systems thinking.
This chapter provides an alternative approach to career and technical education (CTE) and the use of e-learning technologies. The authors suggested that, by shifting our emphasis in education from the development of people to meet occupational and economic needs to the development of people as individuals, they might become more successful in meeting occupational and economic goals. Based on lifelong learning, we concentrated on experiential learning, critical reflection, transformative learning, and learning communities as best educational practices. Having established the pedagogical basis for lifelong learning, they will then focus on the impact of e-learning and how it can be used to foster and develop these practices. The authors then discuss how these technologies can be used to help create lifelong learners and a learning society. The authors conclude with a discussion of two groups of CTE learners and how the use of e-learning technologies may help meet their learning, career and life goals.
