This paper aims to explore the categories, structural formation, lexicon and Romanised characteristics of nomenclature of Chinese streets in Sibu, Sarawak, in Malaysia. Sibu is the third biggest city in Sarawak, and has been labelled ‘New Foochow’ or ‘Little Foochow.’ The Foochow community in Sibu is one of the state’s largest ethnicities. As such, the Foochow culture and dialect play an important role in developing the history of Sibu. Consequently, one significant influence of the Foochow community, and its culture and dialect towards the history of Sibu is the naming of the city streets in Chinese. This study adopts a descriptive and categorical qualitative research methodology to collect and analyse research data on Chinese names of streets in Sibu, Sarawak, Malaysia, and hence employs a historical and comparative study in order to describe the categories, structure, syllabic qualities, and Romanisation of the names of Chinese roads, streets, and lanes in Sibu.
The translator's voice proposed by Hermans doubted the traditional view of the invisibility of the translator in the translation product. Then, Baker's combination of stylometric methods and corpus-based approaches made studying the translator's style possible. However, there is still no agreed-upon description of the translator's style, no practical research methodology, no reliable approach for selecting stylistic indicators, and no compelling theory for studying the translator's style. Hence, this paper aims to summarize the concept, research methodology, research theory, and stylistic indicators of the translator's style study by conducting a holistic literature evaluation of the Translator's Style study. This paper applies the method of systematic literature review which requires the researchers to select the academic articles or books with pre-set criteria. No time limit is set in the selection of meta-data to get a complete picture of the evolution and issues with the translator's style in translation studies. Based on the analysis of 97 samples mainly from Scopus and Web of Science following an updated PRISMA flow, this paper assessed the trend, research methods, and theories of the Translator's Style study.
This study aimed to investigate the effect of reading components (including Chinese character knowledge, morphological knowledge, vocabulary knowledge, grammar knowledge, and lexical inference) on the reading comprehension of 44 Malaysian child learners of Chinese as a foreign language (CFL). Measures of Chinese character knowledge, morphological knowledge, receptive vocabulary, vocabulary synonym, lexical inference, word order, grammatical judgment, and reading comprehension were used. Drawing upon ridge regression, the study found that grammar knowledge (measured by word order and grammatical judgment) had the largest effect on reading comprehension, followed by morphological knowledge and vocabulary knowledge (measured by receptive vocabulary and vocabulary synonym). Lexical inference and Chinese character knowledge had the least effects on reading comprehension. The findings of the study are discussed with pedagogical implications and future research suggestions.
