SummaryLumbar laminectomy often results in failed back surgery syndrome. Most scholars support the three-dimensional theory of adhesion: Fibrosis surrounding the epidural tissues is based on the injured sacrospinalis behind, fibrous rings and posterior longitudinal ligaments. Approaches including using the minimally invasive technique, drugs, biomaterial and nonbiomaterial barriers to prevent the postoperative epidural adhesion were intensively investigated. Nevertheless, the results are far from satisfactory. Our review is based on various implant biomaterials that are used in clinical applications or are under study. We show the advantages and disadvantages of each method. The summary will help us to figure out ideas towards new techniques.The translational potential of this article: This review summarises recent biomaterials-related clinical and basic research that focuses on prevention of epidural adhesion after lumbar laminectomy. We also propose a novel possible translational method where a soft scaffold acts as a physical barrier in the early stage, engineered adipose tissue acts as a biobarrier in the later stage in the application of biomaterials and adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells are used for prevention of epidural adhesion.
Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is a rare iatrogenic disorder associated with controlled ovarian stimulation during assisted reproductive technology. Severe OHSS may impose serious complications, including pleural effusion, acute renal insufficiency, venous thrombosis, and even death, although lethal outcomes are rare in forensic practice. The reported incidence of severe OHSS ranges from 0.008% to 10%. Herein, we present the case of a 29-year-old woman who diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome and infertility chose to undergo assisted reproduction. She received leuprorelin acetate and follicle stimulating hormone prior to egg retrieval. Three days after the retrieval procedure, she developed abdominal pain and distension. Later that same day, she died unexpectedly. The subsequent autopsy revealed turbid effusions of pleural and peritoneal cavities, abnormal ovarian enlargement, and duskiness of multiple organ surfaces. Microscopic examination disclosed edema and hemorrhage in follicles of both ovaries, thrombosis within the myocardial matrix, and massive pulmonary edema. Routine toxicology screening was negative. The death was attributed to severe OHSS. This case provides a morphologic reference for clinical and forensic work. Autopsy findings in instances of severe OHSS provide valuable insight into the mechanisms and pathogenesis of this disease.
The aim of this study was to investigate root canal curvature and direction of maxillary lateral incisors in Shandong, China.
Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of 176 maxillary lateral incisors of 88 patients were collected in Shandong Province, China. Software included with CBCT was used to measure the angle of root canal curvature of maxillary lateral incisors on the maximum bending plane. In addition, the direction of each root canal was recorded. The data were statistically analyzed by SPSS 17.0 software package.
The results showed that all the samples had a single canal (Vertucci's type I). The incidence of straight root canals, curved root canals, and S-type root canals was 39.2%, 58%, and 2.8%, respectively. The difference in the mean angle of root canal curvature failed to identify any differences between the left and right side (

> .05). The most curved root canal of maxillary lateral incisors oriented in the palato-distal direction.
The maxillary lateral incisors were mainly curved root canals of which the proportion of moderate curvature was the largest. Software included with CBCT would provide some valuable information for root canal instrumentation of maxillary lateral incisors.
